The Story
Dee and Jack is a musical based on the true story of my grandparents’ life in the Red River Valley of the North. Dee is an independent thinking, strong, 1940s woman. Her profound love for a young, handsome, farmer named Jack, brings her the most joyful and tragic times in her life. Dee is forced to face one of the most difficult decisions a young woman can make and hold onto the secret for fifty years. Dee and Jack’s story weaves through plenty of hardships, but ultimately is a testament to the survival of the human spirit using perseverance, family and community love, faith, and humor.
Who I Am and My Mission
I am an aspiring playwright, composer, and singer. I have written the script, music, and lyrics of Dee and Jack. This GoFundMe campaign is to help raise the money to do a staged read & sing-through and to make a demo recording of this new musical. A staged read & sing-through allows a new work to be performed in front of live audiences (without the expense of a full production) and gives the creator valuable feedback on the work’s further development needs.
Making a demo recording of the read & sing-through would make it possible for me to submit Dee and Jack to future festivals and programs around the nation, giving it a future performance life.
What Donations Will Be Used For
Donations will be used for the costs of a pianist/musical director, stage director, ten singers, a recording sound tech and gas mileage for artists. The estimated cost of doing a staged reading & sing through is $5,500.00. This will cover all rehearsals and live performances. As soon as the funds are raised, the project can begin.
The Music
This show will transport the audience back to the 1940’s - 1960’s with music fashioned in the styles of golden age musical theatre, swing, polka, and popular music. To hear a few short musical samples that I have funded on my own, you can click on the YouTube links I’ve provided below.
