Please help our Dedham Future Problem Solving team get to Iowa!
This team of 6th graders placed first in Massachusetts at the FPS State Bowl and has earned the distinction as the only Massachusetts team in their division invited to compete at the International Conference in Ames, Iowa in June 2015.
The conference brings together top teams from around the world for three days of competition and creativity, along with the building of community as kids gather together in the spirit of tackling world problems.
Future Problem Solving is an international, academic program that encourages students in grades 4 through 12 to think creatively and critically as they address global issues. FPS helps students to develop a vision of the future and empowers them to take a lead in solving the world’s most challenging problems.
This team proudly refers to themselves as the "Guinea Pigs" (though their coach calls them the "Dream Team"). They were the first Dedham team established and helped as 4th graders to pilot a town-wide program that today has grown to 8 teams (about 30 students) across the town.
The team of four has met most weeks of every school year after school, logging well over 100 hours of problem solving!
At the International Conference, teams from across the globe will work to brainstorm solutions to problems related to intellectual property in future society.
Together the team has researched and addressed the issues surrounding the topics of social media, megacities, land transportation, social isolation, desertification, processed foods, surveillance, celebrity influence, robot use, ocean pollution, propaganda, and human enhancement in our future world!
Your support will help to defray the cost of this trip for the four students and their coach.
We are hoping to raise $3000 for registration expenses, and we ask for your help. ($3250 is our goal to take online charges into account).
Any additional funds raised over $3000 will be put toward other conference-related expenses (including airfare). Total expenses for the team will be $6000.
Families will personally cover the costs for a parent to accompany each 6th grader.
