Hi everyone, I'm currently in the process of transitioning. Top Surgery (also called a Double Mastectomy) is the next step in feeling at home in my body.
I'm scheduled for a consult at the beginning of May with Dr. Giancarlo McEvenue at the Mclean Clinic in Missisauga, ON.
OHIP covers the cost of SRS mastectomy as it is linked to the gender dysphoria I experience. However, Contouring (removing fat pockets from around the armpits) as well as Nipple Grafts are considered 'cosmetic' by the government and therefore not covered. I require both nipple grafts and contouring, done at the same time as the mastectomy. This extra procedure costs $2,000 + HST.
My aftercare will reqire gauze pads, medications, scar gels/strips, and time off work for recovery. I plan to stay at the Sherbourne Health Centre for the first week or two of my recovery, and will also require bus money/gas money to get to and from my post-surgical appointments.
I'll keep you all updated as my consultation appointment approaches (May 9th, 2018). My goal is to raise at least $1500 before the end of May. Although I currently have a PT job, I have no way to pay for both my rent and this surgery.
