Family and friends,

I rarely post on social media and do not enjoy asking for money. However, at this time, members of my immediate family whom I love dearly are in great need of your financial and spiritual support. Last night, my cousin David was playing volleyball and suddenly he grabbed the back of his neck, turned to me and said, “Alex, I've never felt anything like this before, I need help.” At first, we didn’t take his remark seriously. Shortly after, it became clear that something was very wrong and we felt the enormity of the problem. No one expects or is prepared for something like this to happen during a casual evening of volleyball, (especially to a guy as young, active, and healthy as David) but we soon found ourselves rushing him to the ER. I write this while sitting outside his room in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital where he remains completely unresponsive and unable to breathe on his own. This has quickly become a season of immense spiritual and emotional confusion for our family as we struggle to rationalize what this is, and why or how it is happening. The results from both a CT and MRI scan have come up with no real conclusions as to why this is happening. Doctors have yet to determine a clear diagnosis.

Though it’s only been approximately eighteen hours since this incident, an extraordinary number of people throughout multiple churches have begun praying for this dearly loved young man. Through growing up alongside him, I have personally come to know David as an incredibly mature, thoughtful, and kind person who never fails to put others before himself. The love and empathy David has poured out to his community speaks volumes more than anything I could say about him—he is a child of God and an example of Jesus to everyone who knows him.

At this point in time, David is not covered by health insurance and his parents, Ella and Vasile, the mother and father of six children, will have to shoulder these unexpected substantial expenses out of pocket. Your financial and prayerful support is needed to help the Bangean family get David back into his junior year of college where he belongs, studying electrical engineering and being a 20 year old guy.

As David was losing consciousness on the drive over to the hospital, he told me, “If I die tonight, I know I will be with Jesus.”

We ask for your prayers: that David would make a full recovery, that God would provide healing, and that God would provide wisdom to and bless the hands of the physicians treating him. We trust deeply in God’s sovereignty in this situation because we know the mighty power and love of our Lord, Jesus Christ. We humbly ask that you would help our family in this time of need in any way you are able. Thank you.

Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Things are well and going as planned at Shepherd. David is expected to be paralyzed from the neck down and on a ventilator for the rest of his life, as such, we are planning accordingly. He is expected to be discharged on November 14th. We pray and know the God will heal him in His time. Thank you so much to each of you for your love, prayer, and support.

From the Bangean family:

We would like to express our deepest and most heartfelt thanks to you all. David was approved for GeorgiaCare although we are still awaiting TennCare's approval notification.

Doctors concluded the diagnosis to be fibrocartilaginous embolism. He is expected to be ventilator dependent and unable to move from the neck down for the rest of his life. We continue to believe and trust that God will do a miracle in His own timing.

While at the Shepherd Center, David's prognosis did not change, but we have been so blessed by all the resources and equipment provided to help him enhance his quality of life. Although David is paralyzed from the neck down, he is still the same David and makes everyone laugh when they enter his room. His love for Jesus has never waivered. Our time here at Shepherd is nearing an end, and we will be taking David home in November. Due to David's needs, our current home is unable to suffice. We plan to sell our
home and await the building of a new home in which David's needs will be better accommodated.

We understand and know that God is in control of all things and He works all things for our good.

David has been at Shepherd’s Center for almost 2 weeks now. He has experienced a testing time adjusting to life with a new breathing machine among other health related adversities but has grown accustomed to his renewed environment; Shepherd’s has already had a favorable impact on him and his family.

Doctors at Shepherd’s agree with Gwinnett’s diagnosis that David has suffered a Fibrocartilaginous Embolism. Physicians do not have treatments or remedies to aide in any physical restoration. He and the family are undergoing a series of courses and activities which help teach them how to move forward with his current condition and enhance his quality of life as much as possible. They have dedicated specialists for all activities including breathing, speaking, bathing, and even maneuvering about in a specialized wheel chair. Recently, he was able to go for a park outing with some of the other patients where he was able to enjoy the outdoors for the first time since the incident.

Shepherd’s primary concern is coaching the family for their transition back home. Family and friends are already preparing for David’s return with the construction of ramps, wider doorways, as well as the addition of a larger room and restroom. His family is looking into purchasing a specialized vehicle in order to transport David about as well as integral home medical equipment since they are expected to be discharged in about a month’s time.

The family extends their gratitude for the outpouring of spiritual and financial support. They continue to place themselves under the waterfall of grace, waiting and trusting in God’s sovereign plan for their lives.

Thank you all for your assistance in contacting both the Governor’s Office and the TennCare Department. TennCare has reached out and mentioned that the quickest way to receive coverage is to get approved for social security disability; after which, David would automatically be approved for TennCare. The offices of US Senator Bob Corker, State Senator Ferrell Haile, and Congressman Diane Black have reached out regarding this issue as well and will aide in fast-tracking his application.

There is also some wonderful news to share! The Lord has opened seemingly closed doors in some unexpected ways. We have received confirmation from both Shepherd Center and Gwinnett Medical Center that they have come to an agreement. On Monday 9/18, EMS is scheduled to move David from Gwinnett to Shepherd where he will begin several weeks of rehabilitation. This is still an uphill journey as David continues to rely on the ventilator and cannot voluntarily move any part of his body below the neck. The family thanks God that he has carried and sustained them through this hardship. He has revealed that His mighty sovereign hand is at work in every step of the way.

Many thanks to each of you for your prayers, love, and support. We look forward to providing updates from Shepherd and seeing how God will continue to work on David’s behalf.
