David's College Fund

$12,589 of $13,000 goal

Raised by 79 people in 10 months
Created July 24, 2018
David successfully completed his first semester at Iowa Lakes Community College! He thrived in the classroom and on the soccer field, earning a 4.0 GPA in his first academic semester in the U.S. and started 4 games (played in 9), scoring 9 goals on the season.

Last summer, thanks to generous support from friends, we raised $6,700 to cover the first semester tuition, housing, transport, and food. While David applied for numerous scholarships, he has yet to secure any additional funding to cover the costs associated with school so we are back at it again. Your support will ensure David completes his first year of school!

More about David:

He joined CameroonFDP* eight years ago when he was in primary school. He was initially attracted to the soccer equipment, knowledgeable coaches, and drills, but soon realized that it was about more than just the game. He quickly emerged as a leader with great potential, serving as president of his school club and an assistant coach in his community.

Early on, David expressed an interest to come to the U.S. to study. Despite his admirable work ethic and determination, he became so frustrated with his experience as a student in high school he nearly dropped out.  Thanks to advice from a mentor in the CameroonFDP network, he stayed in school and completed his education. He continued to pursue his goal of coming to the U.S. to study.

In the summer of 2018, David gained admittance to Iowa Lakes Community College to begin this journey to make his dream a reality.

*CameroonFDP, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit with the mission to improve the lives of youth in Africa through the game of soccer, is proud to support David in this next phase of his education and encourages you to do the same! Learn more about CameroonFDP's work here .

The kid is back in school! After a great holiday break, spending time in Wheeling, WV and Pittsburgh, PA, David went back to Iowa to compete his 1st year of school. He is back on the field training and in the classroom as well. He got a 99% in his sociology course that took much of his extra time over the break. It's a great start to the new year.

We've still got a ways to go to reach out goal of $13k to cover the second half of the academic year. Anything you can contribute to support David will go directly to tuition ($4k), housing ($1.5k), and food ($1k). Thanks in advance!

Dear Friends & Family:

Like many people, I spent some time over this past Thanksgiving weekend reflecting on all the things I have to be grateful for. Mostly, it comes down to the people who are in my life... including you!

Reading through all of the supports of this campaign is inspiring. Let me say thanks once more for your contribution. I do apologize for the long silence regarding David’s progress, but wanted to use this opportunity to send a quick update on his first semester:

He finished the season playing for the 2nd team, where they had a winning record (5-2-1) and he started 4 of 8 games and scored 9 goals.

On the academic front, he took 5 courses and has A’s in all of them except Public Speaking, where he is working to bring up that B before the end of the term.

Please save the date for Tuesday, December 18th from 6pm-9pm at Ascender in East Liberty (PGH)!

We’re hosting a combined Welcome Home for David / Birthday Party for Me / Celebration of CameroonFDP's accomplishments this year. More information coming soon… but wanted to get it on your calendar!

Really hope you can make it! Both David and I look forward to seeing you there!

With much gratitude,
Justin

Can't believe David began his journey over the weekend!! I asked him to reflect on what he was thinking about this experience... Here are some of his thoughts en route:

It's hard to describe how I feel right now. Sitting at the airport knowing in a couple of hours I'll be in Iowa. I know without a doubt this is definitely the next step towards my biggest dream. I can't say I'm not excited, but saying I am probably isn't accurate. I feel weird, like I'm in a deep sleep dreaming. I mean I'm not surprised this is happening, because I knew it would. I was confident. But the feeling you get when it actually happens is just unexplainable.

I have huge goals for this year, and thoughts of them are just revolving in my head. But with every thought that comes into my mind, the more confident I get because I am DAVID!
