As many of you know by now, my brother, Daniel was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) on October 16th. Since that day, we’ve been overwhelmed by the constant support, outreach, and overall kind words provided by our friends, family, and loved ones.

For those of you that may not know the full story, Daniel went into the ER on October 15th with symptoms of extreme fatigue, barely being able to walk, and severe headaches. Within 24 hours of his admission, our family heard the spectrum of diagnoses that transpired from just “extreme anemia” to the final words that changed our lives forever, “leukemia”. Immediately, we were filled with shock, despair, and an overall sense of confusion. “How could our Daniel at just 28 years old, be diagnosed with cancer?” crossed several of our minds.

Fast forward to present day, and all we can say is we are blessed. ALL is not the hardest cancer to beat but it is not the easiest.  Treatment is an intense 6 months with 8 rounds of chemo every 21 days requiring hospital stays each round for at least a week. These past 2 months could easily be compared to a roller coaster. There were constant battles of low hemoglobin, white cell, and platelet levels. These caused fatigue, low oxygen, an extremely weakened immune system, and a risk of bleeding.  Each treatment affects these levels differently and it’s been a constant battle to bring up these levels. If you are a blood donor, bless you!  Daniel has already received 26 blood transfusions and numerous IV bags of platelets. Though the treatment is hard, we thank God that Daniel’s cancer was caught and diagnosed in time! We were recently told by the doctors that for patients at the same state he was in, there is a 100% mortality rate within 4-5 weeks without treatment.

Daniel, his wife Rebecca, and our families are truly humbled by all the love, prayers and support from family, friends, our church families, and the wonderful oncology staff at Mercy Hospital. Daniel and Rebecca are fighting as hard as they can and need as much help as they can get.  They have had to spend 40 out of the last 66 days in the hospital.  Due to the nature of his treatment and amount of time in the hospital, Daniel requires constant care, which means both Daniel and Rebecca have had to put their jobs on hold. We are grateful for any help with the financial burden of mounting medical bills and expenses, so they can focus on their fight.   Any amount of support would be a tremendous blessing to help get them through.

It’s hard to believe it has been 15 months since Daniel’s first diagnosis in October 16, 2017. Daniel and Rebecca could not have made it through the past 15 months without God’s faithfulness and the prayers and support of so many dear family and friends. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Daniel and Rebecca had just started getting some semblance of their life back after the initial debilitating treatments. Daniel was back at work while going through the beginning of 2 years of maintenance chemo and he and Rebecca were starting to be able to more actively participate in their beloved church and community group again. Then, around Christmas, we discovered Daniel’s leukemia had relapsed. The mountain is now much bigger as relapsed leukemia is harder to beat. There are limited options, but we have a big God! This road keeps getting longer and harder for Daniel and Rebecca. However, a favorite saying is ‘Never give up!’. And #TeamDaniel is ready to fight again!
Within 24 hours of the relapse, Daniel was taken by ambulance to Iowa City about 2 hours from their home. Daniel and Rebecca have spent the last 3 1/2 weeks in the hospital dealing with fever, infection, low blood counts, chemo side effects, and trying a new immunotherapy treatment, Blincyto.

Unfortunately, Blincyto caused some dangerous side effects and it had to be stopped. Due to the side effects Daniel experienced, he was unable to restart Blincyto, which meant his options were even more limited.

Thankfully, Daniel is back in stable condition and was referred to a hospital in St. Louis for a promising new CAR-T Cell therapy. CAR-T is only FDA approved for younger patients through age 25, so the hope and prayer is for him to get accepted in one of the CAR-T Cell adult trials at St. Louis. The current treatment plan is to achieve remission again with CAR-T Cell therapy, and then receive a stem cell transplant.
We wish that all Rebecca and Daniel had to focus on is fighting this awful disease, but unfortunately the reality is they also face the burden of putting jobs on hold, bearing mounting medical expenses, and now expenses with treatment in another city away from home.

Many have asked what more they can do to help. Prayer is the utmost need, as they desperately need miracles and divine strength to face what lies ahead. Some have been asking about a GoFundMe, so I am sharing the GoFundMe that was started with his initial diagnosis. As you can imagine, the financial burden is truly great if you feel lead to lift them up in this way. Despite the incredibly difficult challenges they have faced with relapse, they have seen evidence of God at work in miraculous ways.

Thank you for being a part of #TeamDaniel and helping keep the faith and the fight! We are so thankful for each and every one of you!

Love to All!

Hi All,

Daniel is out of surgery and recovering. He's awake, but groggy. He'll be in ICU for the next couple of days to prevent any infections. However, we received great news that the surgery went much better than expected. He is experiencing some pain, but his levels are much lower than before surgery. Thank you all friends and family for your prayers through this. Once he leaves ICU he'll go home for a couple weeks to fully heal prior to starting back up with chemo.

Hopefully many of you have heard the news, but if not, Daniel's biopsy came back clear and he is officially in remission!!!!! Daniel finished R5 this past week, and while it was tough on his body, mentally we are all thankful that he was able to push through the pain due to answered prayers. Daniel will still continue with the last three rounds of treatment, but now with a renewed mindset. Thank you all who have supported him throughout this time. Love to all!

Thank you everyone who has offered Daniel support whether through donations, prayer, or words of encouragement. We are overwhelmed by all of the generosity provided.

Daniel has finished R4 of 8. This round was tough for him, but we are blessed he has incredible doctors and medical staff who are willing to listen to his body and treat him as an individual with unique responses to treatment. The even rounds are not his favorite, but this time the medical staff were able to catch things early, and Daniel did not have to return to the hospital (small victories!).

Tomorrow, the 17th, Daniel will have a bone marrow biopsy. The results will determine if Daniel is in remission and will continue as planned for the last 4 rounds. If this is not the result, than the treatment plan will change and Daniel will transfer to Iowa City for a month.

To quote Daniel: "We have prayed and asked for healing so we are hoping in the Lord for a biopsy that shows remission and keeps us close to home." Please continue to pray with us in this request.
Love to All,
Deanna
