Dan Groshong Family Memorial Fund

Donation protected
Daniel Groshong died in a tragic accident in East Timor on August 12, 2017 when the car he was riding in was crushed by a falling tree in a rainstorm.  Dan was on his way from the capital of Dili to a remote village in Timor’s coffee growing region to work with a coffee cooperative that Dan’s Hummingfish Foundation was helping.

This gofundme is to help support Dan’s family – wife Menzi, 15 year old son Agos, and 12 year old daughter Anna May, who live in Hong Kong. Since 2010 Dan dedicated his life, and a great part of his income, to his non-profit Hummingfish Foundation, which is devoted to helping communities develop sustainable businesses. Dan’s sudden death left his family with very limited resources, and this fund will give the family stability as they transition to a life without Dan. Menzi currently works two jobs, so it will be a challenge for her to supplement the family’s income to cover expenses for rent, school fees, and living. Any funds above the goal will go toward the family’s future living and education expenses.

Dan leaves a legacy of having built a successful model for improving the lives of people who once lived in poverty. We are attaching photos and videos of Dan’s recent work in East Timor, in which he led the Timorese in developing eco-tourism, and building export markets for beautiful soaps made by a women’s cooperative, and world class gourmet coffee from the Maubere mountain region.

Born in Portland, Oregon, USA in 1962, Dan graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute, and then began his career as a professional sports and news photographer, covering events ranging from the 1992 Olympics to armed conflicts in Chiapas, Somalia, Afghanistan, Kashmir, and the referendum for independence in East Timor.  After repeatedly surviving near death situations as a result of his work, Dan decided to transition his focus from combat to education and building sustainable income opportunities for the people of emerging countries (post- conflict).  When we lost Daniel, he was conducting business-as-usual, working hand-in-hand with a people he loved and was committed to help.

My name is Jud Groshong, and I am Dan's oldest brother.  I live in California, and I am coordinating this fund on behalf of Dan's US family, to support Menzi, Agos, and Anna May in Hong Kong.  We are reaching out to all who were touched by Dan’s life and work, to help his treasured family have the resources they need during this difficult transition.
