Dear Family and Friends-

If you’re visiting this site, you likely already know that my sweet sister, Dana, is in the fight of her life. We greatly appreciate all the love, support, and prayers that you have provided. There is no doubt that she and those closest to her would not have been able to make it this far without them.

For those of you that we haven’t been able to update along the way, I’ll provide a recap of what brought us to this point. On Saturday, February 4, Dana started feeling sick, primarily with cold symptoms. Not feeling too bad on Sunday, she flew a few trips for work on Sunday. However, on Monday she began to feel much worse (and described it to me “sad city,” as she often says) and decided in the early morning to go to the ER. This was really telling, as Dana despises hospitals. During the visit, she was diagnosed with influenza strain A and a chest x-ray was performed. The chest x-ray came back clear and she was sent home with Tamaflu. However, Dana continued to feel worse throughout the day and was in significant pain. She was taken back to the ER and her breathing was very labored.  Another chest x-ray was taken, but this time it showed pneumonia.

Overnight, Dana’s symptoms worsened and the St. Joseph’s staff did an absolutely heroic job to stabilize her. They quickly determined that she needed to be put on VA ECMO, the highest level of life support which bypasses both the heart and lungs. Doing so stabilized her condition so that she could be transported to a specialized department at USC Medical Center on Wednesday night. Later in the week, she was transitioned from VA ECMO to VV ECMO (lung support only) because he heart became strong enough to work on its own again. This was great news, but her lungs are still very sick.

We are here at USC Medical Center now and she continues to fight like you all know she would. This will be a long road for her and progress will be slow despite all efforts being taken. Dana is unbelievably strong and determined, but she needs your continued prayers and support. Please keep her in your thoughts.

I will continue updates on this site as I can, so please check back here to learn the latest. When you stop by, please leave a note because it helps us to remember how many special people she has pulling for her. I have been documenting things along this journey so that I can share with her when she wakes up, and your notes will only add to the joy.

Love,
Erin

Good morning,
Dana continues to heal. Her lungs are regenerating. As it stands, she is being prepared for a lung transplant. But this may not be necessary, as her lungs continue to heal. The miracle keeps working. Her body is so incredible. And she is working so, very hard! Her spirits have been down, which has been so hard to watch. We all know that my sister’s glass of pinot is half full. Her personality is so bright and happy. So, we are working on this diligently with the teams at USC, our amazing family and her wonderful friends. But at the end of the day, she is moving in the right direction.
It is still all very surreal. I keep telling her that this will soon be a bad memory. She wants to go home so badly. It will happen. The doctors, nurses and staff are her biggest fans (beside all of us, of course). She has and continues to make such an impression. I will never see Dana in the same light. My little hero. I cannot wait to celebrate her health and homecoming at a big party!

You can mail letters or cards to Dana if you would like! Keck Medical Center of USC, 1500 San Pablo Street, Los Angeles, CA 90033 attention: Dana Nussbaum 4112. Please let me know if you would like to visit. Short visits are best. You can always text me at 951-818-0582

Love, E

An Irish pray for Healing

May the blessing of light upon you,
Light on the outside, Light on the inside,
With God’s sunlight shining on you,
May your heart glow with warmth,
Like a turf fire that welcomes friends and strangers alike.
May the light of the Lord shine from your eyes,
Like a candle in the window,
Welcoming the weary traveler.
May the blessings of God’s soft rain be on you,
Falling gently on your head, refreshing your soul
With the sweetness of little flowers newly blooming.
May the strength of the winds of Heaven bless you.
Carrying the rain to wash your spirit clean
Sparkling after in the sunlight.
May the blessing of God’s Earth be on you.
May you understand the strength and power of God.
In a thunderstorm in winter, And the quiet beauty of creation,
In the calm of a summer sunset, And may you come to realize,
that, insignificant as you may seem is this great universe,
You are an important part of God’s plan,
And a important part of your family and friends lives,
We are your clan,
May HE watch over you and keep you safe from harm.
May HE heal your injuries and bring peace to those that care for you and ove you.
In Jesus name, we pray.

Amen

It has been an absolutely amazing day! Today the ECMO was removed from Dana and taken AWAY! Gone baby, gone!! AND we were able to take her outside. It was spectacular! It is the first time that she has seen the sun in nine weeks (to the day). She put her palms up and her head back and soaked in the breeze and the warmth. I know that the prayers and the love that have been sent up these past weeks have been a huge part in bringing her this far. Dana is fighting so hard to heal and get strong. She is trying to eat, but she isn’t very hungry. Protein and carbs are key to her diet. I think that the peanut butter and chocolate shake from Ruby’s that I brought today totally fits that bill :)

We have been very blessed with the events of today. Praying for breath and healed lungs and a peaceful spirit.

Xoxo, sissy

Today Dana is doing well. You ask her and she gives you a “so so” face. She doesn’t comprehend how far she has come. I am glad. We tell her all the time how will she is going and that she is beating the odds and kicking butt. It’s all the truth. We certainly still send up MANY prayers and keep much faith. She is doing well with a day/night routine. Days are long. She looks at magazines and watches shows. Dana is amazing and will forever be my hero. So tough.

Strength, endurance and passion.

Dana continues to move in the right direction. Today she shows no positive cultures for influenza! WOW!! This is exciting! She continues to improve on the machines, as the doctors and respiratory team want. So, this means she is working on breathing on her own. Dana keeps exceeding the expectations of the PT and OT teams. Starting tomorrow she will have two sessions a day. She is working so hard. Hoping today that Speech Therapy comes with a trial of chicken noodle soup and a banana! Keep the prayers coming! God is so good. Please let me know if you’d like to visit as early as possible. Trying to keep things calm for Dana.

Most Holy and Adorable Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, for Your own glory and the sanctification of souls, glorify Your servant Blessed Miriam Teresa, by granting to us the graces which we humbly ask through her intercession.
