On 17-05-2018 it is 75 years ago that the Avro Lancaster AJ-S crashed during the flight to the Sorpe dam in Nazi Germany at Gilze-Rijen airbase.

After being hit by German anti-aircraft fire above Molenschot, the aircraft was caught by a searchlight, placed at the airbase. As a result, the pilot may also have been blinded and, whether or not in combination with the damage the aircraft already had, the plane crashed. Here the entire crew has died. They are buried in the war cemetery in Bergen op Zoom.

Now, almost 75 years later, these men have not yet received a monument to the exploits they have made to change the course of the war and thus liberate the Netherlands.

However, this is changing! Together with a small group of devotees, conversations were held with the air base commander and the Tradition Room at Gilze-Rijen Air Base. A monument will be unveiled on the 4th of May. And not by anyone! Mr. Lewis Burpee, the son of the late Pilot Officer Lewis Burpee DFM will travel from Canada to The Netherlands to unveil the monument and to visit his father grave.

The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight recognizes the value of this homage and will attent the unveiling and will perform a flyby with their Avro Lancaster.
The devotees will put in their part of funding the monument but this is by far not enough.

That's why this crowdfunding page. We started this action to pay for the monument, and hopefully also the flight costs of Mr. and Mrs. Burpee from Canada to NL and v.v.

Please help us to realize all this and donate an amount that you can easily miss. You make a lot of people happy with it but more important, the crew finally will be honored as they deserve!

For people who donate € 75 or more we can do something in the form of the invitation to be present at the unveiling or a very beautiful canvas as above of an Avro Lancaster Dambuster.

Charles Foster, nephew of Dambuster pilot David Maltby, thinks that the photo that we show, might not be the right crew! I bought that one on Ebay from "a specialist". It's a real photo with, printed by computer, Burpee's name on it. It looks like the photo is official (IWM?) I've send the photo to Lewis Burpee (Jr) and asked if he could help. I'm waiting for an answer. This photo I've received from Charles (Dambustersblog.com) and shows P/O Leonard George Weller (W.Op./Air Gnr.) on the left and Lewis Burpee. Many thanks to Charles for his advice and help!!
