Jonny Fritz needs a hip

5 years ago I ran a marathon in California. I got hurt a couple weeks before the race but I'm an idiot and I ran it anyway. What I would later find out is that I was suffereing from a series of micrscopic fractures in my left femur. The bone would envtually die and eat away at the cartilage in my hip.

Fast forward 4 years and I'm limping and hobbling around looking for help. I can't sleep well, walk straight or drive much. I tried everything from acupunture to steroids but to no avail (well, the steroids were great but only for a few days). An X-Ray showed that I had about a %40 loss of cartilage in my hip but no surgeon would touch me. They all agreed that I needed a hip but the risk of performing such a surgery on a youngster like myself was too much a liability and they were willing to risk it. So they told me to come back when I was older.

I finally got some answers last month at UCLA. We did an MRI and the results were yucky at best. The entire femoral head was pretty much gone and all the cartilage with it, along with a bonus of some internal bleeding. So we very quickly booked a surgery date for next Wednesday (April 6th).

This is going to happen no matter what but I'm terrified because I really can't afford it. I don't care anymore. It has to happen and it sucks but I'm actually really excited to get it done with.

I have insurance but it's not great and I live in the United States so this is a $50,000 surgery. My bills are going to come to roughy $12,000. I hate asking for money but this is really really important (to me).

I have a record coming out this year and I want to tour it like crazy and I want to shake my ass across the country without having to choke down twenty Ibuprofen. I don't know what to say or how to deal with this.

I really look forward to putting this behind me and to a speedy recovery without fear of losing my house and my stuff. I REALLY look forward to seeing you all this year and to maybe go for a walk and tell you all about it.

Thank you in advance.
Jonny Fritz

Well, I'm walking again and have been pain free this whole time. This has truly been a pleasant experience. I know that sounds stupid or like I'm high but I'm neither. Everyone at UCLA are saints. They bring me tea and strawberries all day and I feel like the celebrity patient. One nurse will bring another in just to check out my leather tote bag and all the projects I have on my bed. It's adorable.

I've been walking a lot today and yesterday and it already feels worlds better than it did for the past year! Even with a gnarly surgical gash in my butt, I can stand up straight and walk straight like I haven't been able to do in so long.

I've been given clearance to go home a day early! So in about an hour I'll be reunited with my Sprinter and I'll get to do something I've never done before; ride passenger.

I cannot wait to show you all my surgery scar. Let me know if you'd like to see it. It's pretty nasty and I got the surgeon to take a pic of it for me.

Words do nothing to describe how grateful I am for this campaign.

Hey y'all, I wanted to update everyone on my hip ordeal. It's been a wild day, to say the least. It all went well and I am not in any pain at all. Mostly due to being super sensitive to the epidural. The bad part is, I can't feel my left leg or my *importants*.
I had my first session with PT where I tried to walk. I really was looking forward to getting up and moving as quick as possible but I think it was too fast. its already hard to stand on a numb leg and combining that with the pain meds and loss of blood and fluids from surgery, I got really nauseous. Then I fainted. The whole floor of medical staff rushed over and laid me back in bed. I was out cold but I could hear the panicking and calling for help from the physical therapist. Scary shit. I came to a moment later, sweating and freaked out! I don't think I've ever been so freaked out. It was a total loss of control on top of being super fragile and vulnerable.
We're gonna try walking again tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it and gonna try my best to hold it together.
In the meantime, I'm making up songs and watching movies. If people like this one and I feel up to it, maybe I'll make more!

I wanted to write to thank everyone for yesterday's donations. We almost got to my surgery cost goal! If the campaign goes over 10k, I will use all the money for Physical Therapy, which I know I'll need a lot of.
Here's a picture of my MRI. The right hip (on the left) is healthy! You can see all the white in the bone and good defined lines. The left hip (on the right) is the problem child. The dark areas are internal bleeding and bone loss. I hear they are going to cut that whole sucker off and glue a new one one! Woof, it sounds so awful but they do it everyday and I'm a great sleeper. Has anyone ever woken up in the middle of surgery? Can you imagine anything worse?
