Recent data indicate that about 241,000 newborns die in Nigeria every year, which represents almost 700 newborns dying every day. At best, these figures represent an underreporting of the true picture in a country where a significant amount of births occur outside health facilities. It is alarming that less than a third of mothers have their delivery in the presence of a skilled attendant.
Perinatal asphyxia in both full term and preterm or low birth weight babies is one of the major causes of newborn mortality in the developing world and any intervention that improves access of newborns to prompt quality resuscitation is bound to result in improved perinatal survival.
Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) is an evidence-based educational program to teach neonatal resuscitation techniques in resource-limited areas. A key concept of HBB is ‘The Golden Minute’: Within one minute of birth, a baby should be breathing well or should be ventilated with a bag and mask. ‘The Golden Minute’ identifies the steps that a birth attendant must take immediately after birth to evaluate a baby and stimulate breathing.
Our organization, 4 Breath 4 life is raising money to buy materials for training and equipping local health providers. All funds are designated for project implementation. We have trained 500 providers so far and are desperate to train more.
We want to fight to save the lives of these voiceless babies! We are confident that every provider we train becomes a powerful agent for change.
