Students Without Textbooks

Dear friends, family, and anyone who can help support a class in need:

My students come from high poverty and most do not have access to the basic resources necessary to thrive in a learning environment. Lack of funding for our school has led to very limited resources and large class sizes.

This year, I will be teaching five classes a day and am expecting over 40 students in each class. I have five textbooks TOTAL for all 200-225 students.  Another major issue that we are facing is lack of paper and printing materials.  Unfortunately, with the resources I have now, my 7th graders will not be able to receive worksheets or guided notes throughout the year.  With large class sizes and students fluctuating in and out of the classroom, we are struggling to find ways to give homework, do projects, take notes and help students reach their full potential.

Most of our students qualify for free lunch, many dealing with serious financial and family problems that extend far beyond problems that we are dealing with in the classroom.  There is no doubt that we are up for a challenge, but it is a challenge we are ready to face. It is important to note that our students are full of personality and ready to learn! They are funny, bright, talented and creative kids that have monumental potential to be successful in the future.

Our class will revolve around leadership all year-inside the classroom and out in the community.  We will be a TEAM! We will live by the motto: "True leaders do the right thing EVEN when no one is watching and EVEN when it is hard." It's easy to do the right thing when you are being praised, but many of the challenges my kids face will be behind closed doors and extremely difficult.  Our class will have a leadership club and we will work together to improve our class, school, and community.

When I entered Teach For America, I knew that inequality existed in the education system.  However, once you actually see how little these kids are given, it is quite the reality check.  Only 1 in 10 students from low-income communities graduates from college. The bottom line is my kids deserve better.

I am asking for funding that will help our kids get basic materials that will be necessary for our classroom: a classroom set of books, 3-pronged folders, pencils, pens, highlighters, printer ink, and A LOT of paper.

Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support, love, and positivity.  I am excited for a great year!
