Dear Family and Friends,
On January 21, 2014, my sweet nephew Michael Adamo was born. Shortly after his delivery, he stopped breathing and was sent to the NICU. After 5 weeks of testing doctors concluded that Michael was born with a severe neurological condition called FoxG1 Syndrome. This syndrome is very rare, with only 30 documented cases in medical literature. Most children with this syndrome cannot walk or talk, struggle to eat, suffer from daily seizures, have problems sleeping and cry excessively. Michael has been no exception. He has battled all of those challenges and more. In his short life he has been hospitalized 13 times, a total of 147 days.
My sister Heather, her husband Peter, and their son Alex, have faced these difficulties with courage and strength. Heather has dedicated herself entirely to Mikey, constantly searching for ways to ease his pain and stimulate his development. Michael requires frequent medical attention and multiple medications and apparatuses for survival. His hospital stays are two hours away from his home, requiring long drives, and overnight stays. These expenses have been astronomical and Heather has not been able to work since he was born. The financial burden of this situation has only exasperated this horrible situation.
Michael is currently in the hospital and doctors are unsure if he will survive this cold and flu season. There are no words to describe the agony my sister and her family are suffering.
