Crossing Bridges Placement

Donation protected
As many of you will know I have taken this year to complete a Masters' degree at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama here in London. This has meant taking a year out of work but it has given me invaluable practical experience, theoretical foundations, and a renewed drive toward a fresh direction in my career.

I have spent the majority of the past six months reading, writing, discussing, theorizing, and case studying. There has been some time in between for some amazing placements but the bulk of my hands on experience is coming up after Easter.

I have applied for and been lucky enough to be accepted into a role at Covenant House, a shelter for homeless and trafficked youth in New York City. A graduate of my course from 2012 has set up a project called Crossing Bridges. Young people at Covenant House audition for 20 places on the course where they recieve masterclasses on voice, movement, writing, directing and more from Broadway professionals. At the end of the project they take over leadership and have 24 hours to create a performance - a 'play-in-a-day' - which is then performed for the public in a professional New York theatre.

The project runs over May-June and has been designed as a "programme that would empower the youth to give breath to the parts of them that still, despite all odds, know they are so much more than homeless. By providing the young people an artistic platform in which they have the freedom to not only choose what narrative to tell but also their place in the narrative, I hoped they would begin to imagine a new place in the world and, perhaps for the first time, see the world as a place of infinite possibility." - http://www.internationalartsmanager.com/uncategorized/young-homeless-people-perform-alongside-broadway-stars.html

The project has been written up in BroadwayWorld:

Now for the money part...
As someone who has been living in London for the past four years I was surprised at my own surprise upon seeing housing costs in NYC. Not to mention flights, and living expences for two months, all without any of the part time supply teaching I've been supporting myself with in London. We have recieved a small grant, I am giving up my place in London, and I'm reducing costs where and when I can but I still need some help.

Anything you can give will be appreciated and will not go unrecognized. I have a few incentives.....

£1 or more and I will link you to the twitter account where you can follow the project.

£10 or more and I will hand paint and write you a personalized NYC themed thank-you post card.

£100 or more and I will let you see the work I do for assessment - a detailed account or the work done with all the findings, evidence, and fun stuff like that!

This course has meant a lot to me and so far has made me very excited about my future post-Masters. Thank you to everyone who has been supporting me, whether in this campaign or emotionally or otherwise. It means the world to me and you've brought me one step closer to achieving my dreams!
