CRMA Middle Nature's Classroom 2017

Donation protected
This year, the Middle School Team at Coral Reef Montessori Academy - a public Montessori school in South Florida - has decided to seize the opportunity to take our students on a trip to New Hampshire to a residential learning site in Hancock. Situated in 700 acres of forest, pond, meadow, river, and bog communities, this living laboratory allows students the chance to discover the wonders of ecology and geology that simply can’t be found in books. Students will live and learn here for five days, and gain a powerful sense of connection with each other while discovering they can make a difference in the world.

We want ALL of our students to experience this fantastic adventure. We would love to take the whole middle school community, and we need your contribution!

Help us make this once in a lifetime experience happen. Help our students help themselves to develop a sense of community, confidence in themselves and an appreciation for others that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Help fight for an education that is well-rounded and unique; for an opportunity that can change a child’s life; for an experience that they will not only remember forever, but that will certainly impact their development and futures in ways that can only be measured in years of reflection to come. Take a look at our kids: these are the 7th and 8th graders of Coral Reef Montessori Academy and they are counting on you to help us achieve our fundraising goal!

We have 90 days to raise $2,500!  Please make any donation you can and spread the word.

As a public school in Miami, Florida, Coral Reef Montessori Academy (CRMA) allows families in any income bracket to choose Montessori for their children. Serving nearly 500 children from ages 3-14, in grades K-8, the purpose of CRMA is to nurture each unique individual, thereby awakening independence, confidence, responsibility and the pursuit of knowledge, thus creating a Montessori community to guide the transformation of global interdependence: respecting ourselves, respecting our community, respecting our natural environment, and respecting our universe.

Building these values and bearing witness to the process that children go through in order to internalize them is remarkable. However, this mission can only be truly achieved through experiences that take place beyond the classroom, enriching the skills that children learn in school.

No single instructional approach fits all children, and no single experience defines a child for the rest of his/her life. However, there are those extraordinary experiences that stand out in our minds as adults – those life-changing events, memories, or circumstances that led each of us to become who we are. Ensuring that ALL children have the opportunity to be exposed to an otherwise unattainable and entirely unique experience beyond the walls of the classroom should be a pillar of instructional strategies. Unfortunately, in a time of educational standardization, this is not the norm.

There is no denying that both standardization and the growing opportunity gap exclude the majority of students in the United States from reaching their full potential and achieving their goals. Rather than responding to the multiple intelligences of children and celebrating their diverse abilities and backgrounds, school often contributes to the mis-education of a child. Maria Montessori was astonished that during the time of physical, emotional, and intellectual turmoil called adolescence, most cultures immobilize children behind desks rather than let them put their energies into meaningful projects. In the words of Dr. Maria Montessori:

"My vision of the future is no longer of people taking exams and proceeding on that verification from that secondary school to the university, but of individuals passing from one stage of independence to a higher [one], by means of their own activity, through their own effort or will, which constitutes the inner evolution of the individual."

Help us achieve this vision.
