Mobile Outreach for the Homeless

My name is Mike Jennings and I work with the homeless, and near homeless, in Cedar Rapids, IA. Through this work, I found that people don't have the basic needs to survive. Our community will do something about that through a project called CR Care A Van.
Beginning Nov 1, 2016, we are going to deliver basic needs to our homeless community. Imagine not having things like deodorant, toothpaste/toothbrushes, gloves, socks, feminine hygiene products, diapers/diaperwipes, combs, blankets, etc... How could you focus on anything else? How could you try to find employment or housing without even being able to clean yourself up? We want to do something about that. We are in the process of becoming a 501(c)(3), but we need funds to jumpstart this initiative before the cold weather arrives.
In order to make this a reality and make a difference, we need donations from people like you. YOU can make the difference. We will use the $20,000 to purchase these basic goods, as well as an old uhaul truck to deliver them. Our goal is that if someone needs help, regardless of whether or not they are homeless, we will help. If you need toothpaste, and we have toothpaste, you can have it. No questions asked. We will go where the homeless community congregates; places where hot meals are served, or shelters are set up, or anywhere else we find a need. Ultimately, we hope to earn the trust of our homeless population so that we can begin helping them get signed up for healthcare, or find a doctor who will accept a new Medicaid patient, or get transportation so they can go to an appointment with their doctor, or find employment, or connect them with housing, or however else we can help them improve their quality of life.
Ultimately, by Nov 2017, we hope to purchase a 35-40 foot RV with an exam room, laboratory, consultation rooms, and a waiting room that will be staffed by medical professionals (volunteers) who will take health care to the people that need it, where they need it. For now, we just need to provide for the basic needs and start building relationships.
