Cramp Your Style
Cramp Your Style is a project I am starting in order to raise money for women’s sanitary products that will then be donated to local homeless shelters in the Glasgow area.
I’m sure many are aware of the nonsense that is The Tampon Tax. It’s basically a tax on women for just being women. Sanitary products are categorised as a luxury item whereas men’s razors, jaffa cakes and crocodile meat are labelled as necessity items and are exempt from being taxed. There was a huge campaign surrounding the issue where the government responded that they could not reduce the current 5% VAT to a zero rating because of EU law. The European Commission has now announced that countries would have the power to decide their own tax on sanitary products.
This is an amazing step forward for gender equality but these items are still a real necessity for women and I believe should be made more accessible. I’m talking about women and young girls who are homeless. Those who struggle to gather enough money for food never mind tampons. These women don’t have easy access to these items because they are not made readily available.
Cramp Your Style specialises in hand printed tote bags made from organic and sustainable materials that are designed by local artists as well as contributions from myself. Each artist has their design printed in a limited number so anyone who wants to get their work out there can do so easily, quickly and without having to spend a penny. My dream is for this to become successful enough where I can pay the artists for contributing work and inspire similar projects to pop up in the rest of the UK.
Each donation will go towards the production costs of these bags and the profit from selling them will be spent on the sanitary products these women so desperately need.
