COP25

I am a medical student who has a strong interest in the social and environmental determinants of health, including the effect of climate change on health and flow on public health benefits of climate action. As a result, I am fortunate to have been selected to attend the 25th United Nations’ Climate Change Conference (known as the Conference of Parties or COP25) in Madrid, Spain as a member of the International Federation of Medical Students’ (IFMSA) delegation.

Every year, the UN hosts its annual Conference of Parties (COP), bringing thousands of international stakeholders together from member states, civil society groups and intergovernmental agencies to discuss international collaboration on climate change. COP25 will be the deadline for countries to update their first Nationally Determined Contributions to ‘The Paris Agreement’, the global climate treaty to minimise global warming to no more than 1.5 degrees celsius above pre-industrial levels. This is a critical moment for countries to commit to reducing their emissions and enhancing resilience at the scale needed to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. I and other youth delegates aim to drive political will and commitment to implement plans for this agreement.

The IFMSA represents and connects with 1.3 million medical students from 123 countries around the globe who advocate for a healthier world. By participating in COP25, IFMSA aims to integrate health in COP discussions and negotiations, approach country representatives and negotiators to mention health in their Nationally Determined Contributions, and address the role of health and healthcare workers in climate change negotiations. After contributing to IFMSA’s objectives during COP25, I will personally become a more effective climate change advocate and, importantly, I will bring back skills and knowledge to empower fellow advocates in Australia. For example, I will share my experiences with medical students who are interested in climate action on a national scale (through the Australian Medical Students’ Association) and on a local scale at Monash University (through Monash’s Ignite Global Health Group).

I am hoping to raise money to fund my travel and accomodation expenses to COP25 in December 2019. I would be grateful for any contribution you could make towards financing an opportunity for Australia to contribute to international discussions surrounding climate change and health, and for an experience that I will use to drive advocacy, particularly youth-led advocacy, at a local level.
