Heat injury remains one of the largest health and performance concerns with working dogs, yet we still know so little about this potentially deadly condition. Law enforcement, search and rescue, military, and other working dogs seem to be at high risk for this condition because of their high drive and willingness to work hard to protect and serve us. Veterinary Tactical Group is dedicated to improve practical methods of prevention of heat injury in dogs, and increasing dogs’ ability to perform in hot weather. But we need your help!
The VTG team has the opportunity to collaborate on ground breaking research in recognizing signs of “thermal stress” in working dogs, to ultimate prevent heat injury before it occurs. The research does not harm the dogs: we would simply be observing the dogs working in their normal training and recording information on body temperature, their interaction with their handlers, and the performance in the work they love so much. This research is largely self-funded! We will not receive a salary or compensation for the work, and we need to purchase some technical equipment to perform the work efficiently and accurately to best help the dogs and their handlers. We expect that what we learn from the study will be directly applied back to teaching handlers better methods on how to prevent heat injury in the operational, tactical, working environment.
