Consciousness in Education

How can consciousness in education enhance student engagement?

As an educator, I have seen first hand the impact of standardized testing on children. While testing is necessary to examine the efficacy of instruction, many children are not equipped for this style of assessment.

The topic of consciousness in education is becoming increasingly important as children with disabilities are being placed in the least restrictive environment (LRE). According to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), children with disabilities, or children who receive special education, should be placed in a general education classroom with their peers for as much time as possible. This approach (also known as “inclusion”) aims to include children with special education needs in classroom activities, lessons, and socialization. If you’d like to learn more about LRE, you can find it here.

Inclusive settings promote positive behavior interactions between students, and instill children with a sense of tolerance and empathy. Unfortunately, it is not a perfect system, and occurrences of misbehavior can become disruptive. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Survey of Children’s Health found that 9.4% of children aged 2-17 (6.1 million) had been diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in 2016. In the study, they found nearly 2 of 3 (64%) children with ADHD also had another mental, emotional, or behavioral disorder; such as anxiety, depression, Autism Spectrum Disorder, or Tourette syndrome. In 2016, a parent report found that 62% of children diagnosed with ADHD were taking medication.

Rather than prescribing children central nervous system stimulants (which may cause anxiety, irritability, psychosis, or even Tourette’s syndrome), my goal is to offer parents, students, and teachers alternative options to medication using the Muse™  technology enhanced meditation device.

Specifications on Muse 2
Muse measures and tracks data in real time using sounds of weather and nature to represent calm, neutral, and active states. Users can earn points for relaxed states and for recovering from active states.
- EEG system measures brainwaves
- PPG + Pulse Oximetry measures heart rate
- Accelerometer tracks body movements
- PPG + Gyroscope for breath control

How it will be used
Since all students can benefit from self-awareness practices, I plan to implement this with both general education and special education students. To ensure accuracy of results, the following constants will be applied:
- Frequency and duration of use
- Age group
- Time of day
- Data tracking

What I need
- 10 Muse brain fitness headbands (5 general education, 5 special education)
$249 x 10 = $2490
- 10 Muse Case device protection
$40 x 10 = $400
- $2890 + $200 (tax) = $3090 + shipping & handling

Students will learn
- Goal-setting to increase responsibility and accountability
- Social-emotional intelligence / behavior management techniques
- Metacognition (“thinking about thinking”)
- Graphing data to track short-term and long-term progress

Please help me reach my goal to increase consciousness in education. Your contribution helps students and teachers succeed! Every dollar counts. Please help spread the word! Thank you.
