To celebrate 20 years as a a professional choreographer, I've formed a new company, with some incredible dance artists. For our debut performance, "Bodies of Existence/ Dances of Resistance", Company Movimiento explores culture, social issues, and activism inside the current state of our union. Six modern and jazz dance works highlight dance as a tool for social justice and demonstrate how art can inspire discourse for both the observer and performer.
As a Latina choreographer, I have long explored topics of identity and challenges in social equity. I felt compelled to curate and produce an evening of some of these works, as they seem particularly timely and I believe it the responsibility of the artist to make our work count in unsettling times such as these.

Self producing an evening of dance is financially challenging. Art can sometimes be seen as a luxury, a non-essential. And funds for making art are slim, especially when basics of survival take precedence. But as an artist, I believe it is imperative to use our voice and our gifts to try an make sense of the world around us. In doing so, we can create a much needed dialogue that can provide understanding, processing and reconciliation. Would you consider helping me do this?
Company Movimiento includes 18 gifted performing artists from a widely diverse demographic- female, male, White, Black, Latino, Asian, gay, straight, some new to the field, others highly seasoned. And these artists need/deserve to be paid for the time and effort they have dedicated to this performance. This is where I need your support. I am close to my overall projected budget goal, and now I am launching a 14 day fundraising period. Our show opens in two weeks, and I would ask that you help by standing in the gap of funds already raised, along projected ticket sales that will also go towards paying these dancers.
If you believe that this kind of work is crucial in our current world-if you have enjoyed my work in the past and want to help me launch this company-if you have supported my work before and you want to continue to be a support- if you wish you could be at the show but are unable to attend-please consider giving.
