Hello everyone, I would like to update you all three years down the road since you generously and so kindly contributed to helping an Afghan family purchase a water business to support themselves. The water business remains a going concern, operating throughout the year, and is profitable. This family is totally financially independent in a country where poverty is the norm. They are by no means wealthy, but they can pay comfortably for the basics. There are significant changes afoot within this family, however, which will likely affect the future of this water business, and I thought you all should know about them. There are six brothers in this family of which three have already emigrated to either the UK or Australia. The other three are in the process of emigrating to Australia. Some of the brothers have families, and they all want desperately to achieve better lives for themselves and to educate their daughters. Under the Taliban, girls are not permitted to continue their education past the 6th grade. It is possible the family will sell the water business to pay for the emigration expenses of their children at some point in time. The parents will stay in Afghanistan and move in with their older daughter who will not emigrate. That the parents are open to selling the business in order to help their sons emigrate is a huge sacrifice and indicative of the degree to which they will help their kids accomplish that. They understand they may never see their children or grandchildren again. Here are the words from the brother with whom I have the closest relationship: “ Dear Suzanne, thank you for asking for a clear and honest update. I truly appreciate your continued interest and concern. The water business is currently managed by my brother, Sadeq. It is operating legally and paying taxes, and at this time there is no immediate threat to it because new water purification plants are not being allowed to open, while the existing ones including ours are permitted to continue operating. This has helped maintain some stability in the market. As before, the business performs better during the summer due to higher demand, and during the winter it slows somewhat but still runs fine. The income supports our family. In addition, part of the income helps cover my mother’s medication and medical expenses. Regarding their humanitarian visa case, Sadeq and his family unfortunately missed their interview with the Australian Department of Home Affairs due to internet connectivity issues, which may cause a considerable delay. If they are approved, they will need to travel to Pakistan or Iran to obtain their visas. Pakistani tourist visas are currently very expensive around $2,000 through unofficial channels plus travel costs and airfare to Australia. They are two adults and 4 kids in Sadeq's family. The Australian government does not cover airline tickets under the humanitarian visa program. If they receive visas, the water business would likely need to be sold to raise funds for their travel and relocation. It is the only meaningful asset available to help make this possible. At present, the business is stable and operating, but much depends on the outcome of the visa process. I remain committed to being transparent and will continue to share updates as things develop. Sadeq was in Pakistan but returned to Kabul to take care of our mother’s health and manage the family business. I truly want Sadeq’s sons and daughters to receive a good education. Sadeq is the only brother who studied up to grade 8, and he wants his daughters to continue attending school in the future. Gulsom is already going to school, but in Kabul she will not be able to continue her education after grade six.” I hope you all feel good that the water business may eventually help this family in a different way than intended, one that we did not foresee at the time of this Go Fund Me. As you can imagine, living in Afghanistan is extremely challenging, if not dangerous, under the Taliban. Afghanistan is considered literally the worst country in the world to be born female. Thank you all for allowing this family to create a new trajectory for themselves, one with hope and opportunity. Please do let me know if you have further questions, and I will do my best to answer them. Kindly, Suz

Frequently Asked Questions

A Location Community is an evergreen, place-based page on GoFundMe that brings together fundraising activity which originates in a specific city, region, or geography. It's designed to help people discover what members of their community are raising funds for - near or far - and see the collective impact of generosity raised.

Location Communities aggregate fundraisers connected to a specific place. Today, campaigns appear based on the organizer's location. This means you may see:

  • Fundraisers supporting someone in the same city
  • Campaigns benefiting someone in another state or country
  • National or global causes organized by someone locally

This reflects how giving and support actually works — people often care about things that happen everywhere, not only where they live. We are working to make sourcing more transparent so visitors understand why a fundraiser appears on a page.

Fundraisers currently appear based on where the organizer is located. Many people raise funds for loved ones outside their city, or for causes beyond their immediate geography. These are still real expressions of civic participation. To reduce confusion, we are evaluating ways to make this more evident to the users so the supporters of the Community understand how fundraisers are included.

The goal is transparency!

No. Location Communities are designed to reflect community activity — not editorial curation or endorsement by GoFundMe or local governments. These pages are a visibility layer. They show how residents are organizing and supporting one another.

Location Communities are built specifically for giving and impact. They provide:

  • Centralized discovery of local fundraisers
  • Ongoing activity updates
  • Aggregated impact metrics
  • Follow tools and notifications
  • A trusted donation infrastructure

Unlike social platforms, the focus is not conversation or algorithms designed to doomscrool or drive engagement for ad serving purposes. Communities are designed intentionally to direct people to the ongoing needs of their neighbors so that they can offer help or support by liking, sharing, or donating to a fundraiser.

No. These communities should not be used as hardship indexes. They show civic participation — moments of need and moments of generosity. The emphasis is on how residents show up for one another. They are meant to highlight resilience, action, and collective support.

Your fundraiser was added because it's connected to a shared cause or event —like a crisis, challenge, or location. Communities help bring related fundraisers together so supporters can better understand the bigger picture and find ways to help.

Being in a Community can help your fundraiser get more visibility. Supporters browsing the Community can discover your fundraiser alongside others connected to the same cause, see collective progress, and feel more confident donating as part of a trusted, organized effort. As part of helping you share your fundraiser more broadly, we may automatically cross-post certain updates you share that are relevant for the broader community.

No action was required on your part. Fundraisers are added automatically when they're clearly related to a specific cause.

Yes. If you don't want your fundraiser included, you can opt-out via the fundraiser manage page within your dashboard - simply toggle off the prompt for Allow my fundraiser to be found in search and discovery. Your fundraiser will still remain active and accessible on its own page.

Not at all. Your fundraiser stays fully yours—same goal, same donations, same updates. The Community is simply an additional way for supporters to discover and engage with your fundraiser.
