Stephen Cousins was a husband, father , coach , teacher, and friend. He was dedicated to his family , his friends , and his students . He possessed that unique combination of warmth , humor , brilliance , and passion for making a difference in the lives of his students.

So many speak of  Mr. Cousins as being  one of the best educators  they had and gave them a solid foundation by making science relevant and fun.  Stephen coached the girls’ volleyball team to many victories ,while instilling such camaderie among the team. But, everyone who encountered Stephen remembers his kind , engaging personality, and his greatest role as a loving , involved father, and husband.

Stephen was the patriarch of a special family. His legacy shines like a beacon through his two beautiful daughters , Lauren  and Tessa, who mirror his bright smile and Mary who demonstrates his same kindness and strength . His legacy shines on in his many students who learned so much from him, loved his charismatic personality , and admired him. Stephen Cousins was a great man who will be missed every day, but also remembered every day.

Here are are a few special stories that give a glimpse of how much Stephen did and just how wonderful a man he was .

I remember being at a birthday party and all the kids were jumping in the pool to their Dads. My own father had passed away and I remember “ Uncle Steve” asking me if I could jump to him in the pool. Steve was always the one dad that went out of his way to be inclusive

I will never forget Mr .Cousins’ endless love for the Buffalo Bills & Sabres ; his eyes lit up when anyone mentioned hockey or how unfair football was , particularly when it came to the New England Patriots.  His passion for science and education never failed to impress me ; he always tinkered to find a better way , a clearer method of communicating which marked his teaching.

One funny memory that I have was arm wresting Mr.Cousins . I challenged him because I knew I was the strongest in the grade and I believed that I could beat him. Well, I was wrong - he kicked my butt. He was as strong as a bull ! He certainly made learning fun.
~ Stefano Sbert

I will always remember his witty sense of humor that always followed an academic concept, whether it be joking about Gregor Mendel’s pea pod experiment to his quip about Science class being like congress
( because nothing ever gets done!) Mr . Cousins genuinely cared about the success and well being of his students. He stayed long after school to explain concepts,. He created different study guides designed for specific students to make his curiculum easy for everyone to grasp. I even remember  him coming to my house on one occasion to give me his personal notes , so I could ace the mid-term after I had been absent for the review session.  Mr. Cousins was an extremely impactful person in my life whose legacy will forever be a part of who I am.

Mr. Cousins always helped me with physics lab even though he was not the teacher .  We always talked about movies ; he knew a lot !
~ Cristina Kalb

The year we shared his science office , we talked a lot  and often about old times. He told me that He and Mary made everything for their wedding . He also introduced me to Imagine Dragon. I am going to miss him.
~ Doris Kalb

He said, “Hello “ every morning and he let me go into the lab and play with the robotics pieces .
~ Sebas Kalb

One day on the basketball court Mr. Cousins was dared to make a full court shot . He said that he could do it based  on his knowledge of physics and science . We all thought he was joking until he took the shot and made it - LEGEND !

I never met a man that always had a smile on his face no matter what - until Stephen .  He was genuine and no words fully describe the impact he has made in others lives. Stephen Cousins you will be missed ,but we will honor you and take care of your amazing wife and daughters .
~ Shirley Diaz

I remember Mr. Cousins always helped me out on some of my tests  and gave me extra credit to bring up my grades . He helped me understand Science . He also gave me daily hugs and always believed in me .

Mr .Cousins used to make fun of me for having red  hair in 8th grade -; he kept calling me Ronald Weasley and even wrote about in my yearbook .

When we saw Stephen a few months ago he lit up with a smile and asked about our boys. He was always thinking of his students and others, and exhibited a positive outlook and enthusiasm , even while facing such a unrelenting illness . We will always remember his easy and infectious smile, something Lauren & Tessa share with him.

One of my favorite memories with Mr. Cousins were the labs. The experiments were always unique. I miss Mr. Cousins and will always remember him as a great teacher

I was in Mr.Cousins’ class and advisory for several years. I particularly recall Mr. Cousins teaching me robotics . We had a lot of good times building the robots and he was encouraging even when the robots did not work as intended .  My love of Science was reinforced by his love for the subject.

Mr.Cousins was a great teacher . He was tough ,but fair. He had high expectations of his students. I think he really tried to prepare us for high school and he did .  I will miss him .
~ Robert Morgan

Mr. Cousins was a very kind and caring person and he always made everyone laugh . He was very committed to his students. He is one of my favorite teachers . He will never be forgotten and will stay in our memory .

Mr. Cousins was my favorite sixth grade teacher . My favorite memory was when I came in late one day and with a very serious expression he said , “ Kevin,  I can’t believe you did this . Report to Mr. Cosgrove immediately!” He kept it up until I left the class then he opened the door and called out  while smiling , “ Kevin , come back. I am just kidding.” He was a great entertainer in that way .

Mr. Cousins taught me so much inside & outside the classroom, especially on the volleyball court . He helped me with my skills and taught us with passion and that’s something I will always appreciate
~Lindsey Heffernan

One memory I will never forget  was him always encouraging me to be more aggressive when hitting the ball during our volleyball practices. He was so patient , kind, caring, and showed true dedication to our team and in teaching us Science . He will truly be missed !
~ Carly Heffernan

Mr. Cousins was the kind of person that you can never forget, always positive even in the worst situations. The last time that I saw him was several moths ago and although he was already very sick, all he talked about were his beautiful daughters. I will always remember him as a man with a generous smile.
~Monie Jard

Mr. Cousins was not only a great teacher, but a wonderful person. He always tried to make things entertaining and fun for us. Even though we drove him crazy , he always loved us. He will be dearly missed.
~Victor Jard

Mr. Cousins was so funny. He had a great sense of humor , but he was still a tough teacher . He taught us so much . He used to crack his knuckles a lot in class and say it was a habit . I willl miss him.
~Vincent Prohias

Mr. Cousins wasn’t just a teacher , but a friend. I remember one day in homeroom, we bonded over Panic at the Disco by listening to one of their albums . Funny enough, a year later we ran into each other at their concert. I will miss him, but this memory will always keep him  close to my heart.

Mr. Cousins was the one who showed Max he could conquer the rubix cube and it became an obsession of Max’s shortly after. Max and Mr. Cousins had “friendly” copetitions involving the rubix cube , even after Max graduated. They had so much fun together . Max won the Science Fair Contest at Cushman thanks to his extra help after school. He would stay almost every day with Mr. Cousins . Max and Mr. Cousins were such good friends ; he was a real role model for Max and a true asset to Max’s growth as a person and maturity.
