Colleen's Medical Fund

Hello and welcome to my crowd funding site.  My name is Colleen; I am a retired nurse, first aid attendant and wilderness first aid attendant.  The past couple years has been a bit rough as I am struggling with multiple myeloma, also known as bone marrow cancer.

I’ve seen a lot of cancer in my years of practice in all areas and I’ve known many people who have suffered from some form of cancer as I’m sure many of you have.  It’s rare to not know someone who has cancer, either in your own family or friends and associates, because it is indeed an epidemic in our country.

I am a human being who has spent many hours studying all forms of medicine and I’ve had a few years to consolidate this knowledge which has enabled me to make a more informed decision as to how I wish to manage my cancer.

For me, chemotherapy is not an option due to multiple chemical sensitivities and drug allergies and so my options have been to use more natural means, although some of these methods are quite advanced but not yet accepted by conventional practice.

As a result of so many years in studying medicine and health, nothing is more personal, nor more important than freedom of choice and freedom in general when you’ve been told you have a terminal disease.  When you enter into this special club, some doors open and some doors close.  I’ve experienced both, but it wasn’t until I found myself in a situation I’ve seen so many patients in, with my own cancer diagnosis, that I realized this might be the only TRUE period of freedom that is allowed me at this juncture.

I am sending out this appeal to all those who suffer from this dreadful illness, to those who support them, to those people who support the right to free choice as to what we can and cannot do to heal ourselves, and to all naturopaths, herbalists, and maverick physicians who have gone beyond the borders of fear and intimidation to truly help their patients get well.  I send this appeal also to those who are fighting for freedom of choice in medical care, especially the ones who see the benefit all patients would receive if our health care providers would simply break down the barriers and start working together to help more people.

This is not a journey I ever expected to take, but it’s been necessary, in part to help me understand the psychological component of this illness and all the stigmas attached to it.  You really find out who your friends are, who can cope with your illness and who can’t.  There will be those of genuine friendship with understanding, love and compassion, some of your children may be OK with it, and others will run away, even though they might have promised to stay … everyone goes through their own trauma and their own experience.  Until I experienced this for myself, I had no idea how difficult, how lonely and how hard it’s been to find the courage to stand up for my rights and make the attempt to save my life as I see fit.  I was never a person to sit around and do nothing except only take conventional medical advice that I was given.  I’ve always looked further to find the answers and done my best to deal with my shortcomings and bad habits.  It takes a lot of honesty and it takes a lot of looking in the mirror!

I should have been dead back in June 2013, and was then given another death sentence to ensue by the end of November 2014 … missed that one to.  So here I am still, asking for support to keep myself alive using natural remedies.  I have to pay for all my medicines and treat myself at home with one weekly visit from homecare nurses who say I’m just not sick enough yet to get any more services, although there are days when I can barely pull my meals together.

I send this appeal out in hopes of asking for your help in any way, but also to help spread this appeal to organizations who are fighting for patients rights to choose how they want to manage their illnesses.  If you are unable to help financially, perhaps you could take a little time to help me target organizations who may sponsor my struggle to stay alive.

God Bless each and every one of you and thank you so much for all the support I’ve already received.  May the Angels watch over you and your families and loved ones.
