Coldwater Canyon BST Improvements

Tax deductible
In 2014 Weber Pathways, in partnership with the United States Forest Service, worked very hard to push the Bonneville Shoreline Trail north from Garner Canyon to the North Ogden Divide.

The build was very successful in creating a wonderful trail that is used on a daily basis.  Not only was it a great trail, but it was now the longest continues section of the BST in the state with. With close to 26 miles of continuous single track.

After it's completion in 2015, the North Ogden section of the BST has become a huge favorite to hikers and bikers. However one section of the trail has been semi problematic.  This is the section through the pines on the south side of Coldwater Canyon.

Prior to construction, builders were aware of a "Draba Burkei" plant that grew in the pines on the south side of Coldwater Canyon.  While this did not stop the progression of the trail, it did require extra caution with route finding and construction so to not disturb this protected plant or its habitat.  This extra caution required the trail to be build by hand. Hand-built trails are known to be less durable than machine-built trails and due to the popularity of the trail, sections are wearing fairly quickly so, in some areas, the trail has broken away to create a very narrow tread.

With more than three years of use on this section of trail is has become very apparent that more improvement is needed to make the trail both safe and sustainable.  The plan is to use timbers to repair these sections with crib walls. Crib walls stabilize trails to prevent erosion.

Weber Pathways is seeking help from the public to pay for these trail upgrades. The funds raised from this campaign will be used specifically for the lumber, manpower, and most importantly a helicopter to lift the lumber on to the mountain.

Helicopter you say? Yes. Weber Pathways and the Forest Service originally hoped to deliver on foot. However, to deliver 20,000 lbs of lumber on foot is not very realistic. Each piece is 17' long and weighs 100 lbs.

Anyone that has come to love this section of trail will be a perfect candidate for a donation. Those working to improve the trail will use extreme caution to protect the nature of this trail while creating a wider, safer, and more sustainable trail that will be loved for decades to come.
