COACH THANH NGO is the Cross Country and Track and Field Coach for Northern Guilford High School in Greensboro NC. On June 5th he suffered from terrible pain radiating into his abdomen and had a temperature of 103 degrees. Thinking he had appendicitis his wife took him to the emergency room. After many tests it was discovered that it wasn’t appendicitis. A CT scan revealed that he was suffering from a rare congenital condition called Pulmonary Sequestration. Since the Northern Guilford High School’s Track and Field’s award ceremony and the Senior Class Graduation was the following weekend he told no one of his upcoming major surgery. Instead he organized a wonderful Awards Banquet for the team and then he went to Northern’s graduation ceremony to be there to watch his seniors graduate! Coach Ngo had surgery on June 26th and was placed in ICU afterwards. He had a thoracotomy procedure to remove a large mass which measured 7cm x 5 cm and unfortunately the surgeon could not save his left lower lobe. A lobectomy was performed in which they removed his left lower lobe of his lung and a chest tube was also inserted. He will need at least 4-6 weeks to recover and will not be able to work during this time. Since he just started a full time position he does not have short term disability. The medical expenses are climbing and I’m reaching out to our Northern Guilford families and friends in the area to help Coach Ngo, his wife Esther and baby daughter Lena by making a donation to this Go Fund Me Page. He has spent so much of his spare time coaching the NGHS athletes and being with our kids and away from his family. This  is his 10th year coaching at NGHS. Unfortunately their deductible is high and out of pocket expenses on top of that could reach well over $10,000 not to mention the loss of wages over this time. Please help our coach who has helped build our athletes into not only fine runners but taught them discipline, team work and integrity. We can’t wait to see him back running on the track along with his athletes! ❤️

Please share this link with Northern Guilford High School families and your friends, family and neighbors! He has given so much of his time coaching the athletes, running meets, driving the bus to get them to the meets and he always celebrates all of their achievements by hosting banquets for the team throughout the year! Let’s pay it forward to Coach Ngo!!

Sincerly,
The Melville Family

Post-Op: 2 Weeks

I wanted to shoot out a little update since many people have been asking.

It's been 2 weeks since the surgery and 1 week since I was released from the hospital. It felt like an eternity while we were holed up in the hospital, but now it feels like forever ago that I went in for surgery. It's hard to explain, but I'm glad to be on the mend back at home.

There is still quite a bit of discomfort/tightness at the surgical and chest tube sites. My skin is extra sensitive to the touch, also. I'm still restricted to lifting no more than 5-10 pounds (I'm not confident that I could even handle that much weight anyway). Lena, our daughter, still doesn't understand why daddy can't pick her up and it breaks my heart.

Sleeping at night is tough since my muscles tighten up after staying in the same position for long periods of time. It is only 2 weeks of a 4-6 week recovery window so I can't expect to be feeling loads better yet, I guess.

Thanks, again, to everyone for the continued support!

-Thanh

Good Evening Everyone!
Thanks to all of you we have surpassed our goal of $17500.00 to help Thanh (Coach) Ngo during this difficult time! He, Esther and Lena are now home and Coach is on his way to recovery! It will take some time but he is up to the challenge. He continues to plan on coaching cross country in the fall as long as his surgeon agrees with this plan. We might have to rent him a golf cart so he can chase after his athletes! All kidding aside, Coach and Esther are overcome with emotions by all of your generosity. They have repeatedly said that they don’t know how they can thank everyone enough! Your donations take a huge burden off their shoulders and now they will be able to pay off their medical expenses and not worry so much about Thanh’s unpaid leave of absence (he had just started his full time job and the company has told him that when he is better the job will be waiting for him!). I will be deleting this campaign,as per the request of Thanh and Esther, now that our goal has been surpassed. Thank you all once again for your generosity, love and support for Coach Ngo!!❤️

Most Sincerely,
Janet and Benjamin Melville

Post-Op: The Final Step, Day 7!

I can't believe that we've been in the hospital for 7 whole days! I arrived at 11:30 AM on June 26th and left at approximately 11:30 AM today, July 3rd.

Even though the chest tube has been out for a day and a half, the pain hasn't subsided in any substantial capacity yet. There's still quite a bit of discomfort most of the time and the pain fluctuates often. Nonetheless, it is great to have the chest tube out.

We got home this afternoon and have tried to assimilate back to "normal" life after being in our hospital bubble for so long. You quickly remember all the little things you take for granted in life. Being in your home with all the things that you surround yourself with is a great feeling sometimes.

It sure is great to be back home! Thanks for the awesome cake and dinner from the Melvilles!

And again, we are very, very grateful and appreciative of all the donations, prayers and well wishes that helped us get through the first week of recovery. Thank you to everyone out there!

Post op day 6 - Monday July 2nd

Sorry I didn't post last night!! I waited to begin writing the post after Thanh went to sleep but then dozed off in the middle of typing. The sleep deprivation is real!!!! This update is for Monday 7/2

Every morning Thanh gets an updated chest xray to monitor his healing progress. This morning during rounds we learned that Thanh's latest chest xray looked great! No evidence of an air leak! This meant the chest tube was FINALLY removed! This was such great news! The chest tube has been extremely painful and uncomfortable to move around with! Without the chest tube, Thanh is breathing completely on his own, without the assistance of the tube removing air leaking from the lung. Seriously ya'll, this is huge!!! Thanh appeared to tolerate this well throughout the day. If he continues to breathe without issues and his morning chest xray shows no air building up outside of the lung, then we can go home tomorrow!!!!!The nausea finally appears to be under control and his appetite is back! Thanh is getting up and moving around more. He is trying to walk a little every two hours. Thanh continues to struggle with pain, stiffness, and weakness. We were hoping the pain would decrease with the chest tube out however it actually seems to have increased. Thanh is one tough guy and usually can "push through" the pain but today it has been difficult to do! He is having a hard time sleeping and getting comfortable.....So again...it feels like 2 steps forward, one step back....

If we get to go home tomorrow, Thanh will really begin the recovery process!!! Walking is going to be key for Thanh! He needs to get the air moving in his lungs and slowly build back that strength and endurance. We are currently looking into indoor track options because we can't have him walking out in the 95 degree heat with 90% humidity!

We can't thank you enough for all the love and support!! This has been such a blessing to us!!!! We appreciate each of you so much!! Once Thanh is home, settled and feeling a little better, we look forward to sitting down and responding to each person individually. Even though we wish Thanh didn't have to have a lobectomoy we feel so happy this turned into an opportunity to reconnect with old friends, catch up on the lives of his precious runners, and just connect with so many amazing people who have touched our lives!!!

~Esther Ngo~

Enjoy some throw back pictures from Thanh's early coaching days at Northern!
