Elizabeth English's life was altered forever when on March 29th she was the victim of a hit and run accident while riding her bike home from a pre-med class at The University of Texas, where she's studying to become a psychiatrist. The driver hit Elizabeth from behind, dragging her under his vehicle for about 2,000 feet before driving off and leaving Elizabeth fighting for her life. Fortunately, in the midst of this trauma, Elizabeth intuitively kept her head up to protect her brain. A witness and good samaritan took action to remove Elizabeth from further danger and call an ambulance.

Elizabeth needs our help now - and ongoing, as her recovery will be long and difficult. She suffered massive injuries to her leg, hip and back and is still in critial condition. There is no remaining skin on her back, leaving her muscles and spine exposed. She will continue to have daily debridement surgery on her back and legs in order to keep her wounds clean before skin grafting can begin. Due to Elizabeth's strength and instincts during the trauma of being dragged beneath a car, her spine and muscles are intact. Still, Elizabeth has months of surgeries, physical therapy and other procedures ahead of her in the healing process.

Despite this tragic event, Elizabeth remains positive and upbeat - concerned more for her family and friends than for herself. Elizabeth is the type of person whose smile and sense of humor is infectious. She's ambitious, strong and intelligent - someone with a very bright future. Help us bring her back to health so that she can continue living fully and vibrantly - postively affecting even more lives around her.

She is at University Hospital Brackenridge in Austin, Texas and is in great hands with the hospital's phenomenal trauma team.

The driver who hit Elizabeth was thankfully apprehended the following day by the Austin Police.

Elizabeth needs all the support that her community can provide. Medical and personal expenses are piling up quickly, and her journey to recovery has just begun. Please help in any way you can. No donation is too small.

Hello wonderful people!

Thank you to everyone for all of the loving comments and support!

Elizabeth successfully completed treatment at the rehab clinic, and she returned home a few days ago!

She's been settling in to regular home life; watching Netflix and eating pizza, but still maintaining her workout regimen ;)

Her progress has been AMAZING and swift because of her unbelievably positive attitude, and because of all of the encouragement and support she has received.

She is using a combination of a wheelchair, crutches and a walker to get around. But already, she wants to go faster than these vehicles even allow! Despite her lingering injuries, Elizabeth is encouraged by her fast progress and healing, and she continues to move forward each day! She is so happy to have returned to her home, to her loved ones, and her pets who put a smile on her face every day!

Signing out for now! Catch Elizabeth on the news this evening for a full update! :)

Hello everyone!

Thank you all so much for your amazing support and well wishes!

Quick update:

Elizabeth and her trauma team have been hard at work over here at Brackenridge! In fact, tomorrow she leaves for a rehab facility closely associated with the hospital. This facility maintains the close personal medical care she requires, combined with a minimum of three hours a day for physical and occupational therapy. This is a BIG step, and one she had to jump at when the bed opened up.

Words cannot describe the first day she walked. Literally WALKED down the ICU hallway. The whole staff cheered her on, and her personal surgeon even stopped by on his time off for a fist bump.

Please keep sending the positive energy. Honestly, anything at all, even warm wishes, have really kept her going and have truly kept her motivated to stay optimistic, even during the darkest of days. Optimism and support are really the most important things she needs right now.

There is so much I could say... but three days out of surgery I think these videos say it all. She loves all of you <3
Let's get some music!

If Elizabeth is still in Texas, I don't know if anyone has suggested them, but DARS helps people with the medical and disability access things they need to get along in school or in the job force. http://www.dars.state.tx.us/
