Eva Buller's Back Surgery

Dear Friends of Eva and Elmer Buller

You may or may not have heard that Eva has been excepted to have surgery on her back in Germany, Sept. 2nd. We are very excited for her, but it comes with a great cost.

Twenty or so years ago Eva herniated her L4 & L5 disc. It was a long recovery before she could walk again. Because of the injury it is very easy to re-injure that disc, which has happened many times over the years. Consequently she has lived with a lot of pain and pain killers are not the answer.

Lately she has been in so much pain that she cannot sleep through the night in bed, and has to move to a recliner. After a few hours there she has to get up and walk around. Eva does this every night while you and I are sleeping.

Eva has exhausted different avenues here in Canada over the years, but no one can help her. When desperate, one starts looking elsewhere for help. In Manitoba, there are over 100 people, with spinal injuries, who have gone to Germany for amazing help. Eva knows some of these people. One, a doctor who has great success. Another is a gentleman who has not worked for over 10 years -- who had exactly the same problem that Eva has. He had this surgery in Germany and is now back working full time. Praise the Lord!

What do the surgeons do in Germany you ask?
Well they either rebuild a disc or give a disc replacement which will last a lifetime. The doctor in Manitoba has asked for this in Canada, but the pharmaceutical companies will not allow it. What a shame ... This surgery has been done in Germany now for 20 years with a great success rate.

So a few months ago, we heard that Eva and Elmer were going to sell their home to pay for this much needed surgery. When we heard this we told them “ Please do not do that. We will try to help out.”

So this is our appeal. If their many friends could help share Elmer & Eva's financial burden it would greatly help them. They have not asked us to do this but as friends, we feel a deep desire to help them financially. The total expenses will be just over $50,000. This covers doctor fees, air fare and hotel fees for about three weeks.

If each of us could help out with $20 ... $50 ... $100 or even $1000.00, our dear friends would not have to sell or remortgage their home. No gift is too small. They are leaving Sept. 2nd.

In addition, please be in prayer for her.
Proverbs 22: 9 “A generous man who gives shall too be blessed.”

Mom, is home and doing well. She is overwhelmed at the prospect of a life without pain. The doctors here in Canada had been trying to diagnose her with Fibromyalgia, since she was having pain that was not in her back, but her nerves. Well, PRAISE THE LORD, since the surgery, all of those types of pain are gone. No stiffness in her neck, no crying when someone would just brush her arm. That is all GONE!

She is still suffering with drop foot (no feeling in that left leg), BUT another praise item ... She walked around her cul-de-sac for an hour the other day. well about 25 minutes of walking and the rest visiting ... lol ... but what a major improvement.

Another sign of her getting stronger, she can now get into her bed. When I talked to her, she had spent 2 nights back in bed, and was having much better sleep.

What to pray for ??
1. There is still shooting pains in her legs, especially the left. This is from the nerves trying to heal, but Mom described it as someone stabbing her. This cannot be comfortable and wakes her at night.
2. She needs people to drive her to appointments, as she is not able to drive for 3 months.
3.Funds are still graciously accepted as this is a big debt when the income is not there to supply everything.

I just received this letter from my Mom, for all of you:

How to start this is not easy for me as my eyes sweat a lot over the kindness, compassion and generosity of so many people. Through this experience I have felt “ God with skin on” so to speak. It has been extremely hard and humbling to receive what I haven’t earned but it has taught me in a powerful way of the love Christ has for every individual, unconditional and the way He gave himself for mankind to heal and redeem us.

I want to thank every person for their prayers and gifts of love, large or small, and pray that God would open the windows of heaven and pour out his blessings upon you.

My surgery was on Sept 2nd and my stay in hospital was a week and then in rehab for a week. It was hard when I realized that I had lateral nerve damage after I came to, resulting in what they call drop foot. That disabled my ability to raise my left foot and left my left leg in a very weakened state to the point where I could not lift it or even raise it into bed. It also created the leg from the knee down to be almost totally numb and my skin felt as though it was on fire.

The medical team was tremendous and immediately was put on a machine to pinpoint the problem resulting in the nerve damage being pinpointed. They assured me this would heal although it could take longer than I expected, because nerves take much longer to heal.

We have already seen improvement and I can now lift my leg although the nerve that rules the foot is not responding as yet for which I covet your prayers.

The intense pain that I have lived with for many years and especially very intensely since last Christmas is gone. I am now dealing with nerve pain and the pain of the surgery which can be intense at times but I am getting stronger and I know that my Father surrounds me with His presence and care for which I am deeply grateful.

Thank you all for your support . This is huge. Blessings, Eva Buller

I had the privilege of hearing from mom this morning that "THEY ARE COMING HOME !"

She had her final appointment this morning and last therapies in the afternoon. Found out the surgery was more intensive than originally thought. Besides replacing the disc and the cage, the also put a titanium plate on her sacrum. The doctors told her that in 3 months she will be able to do anything she wants to do !! She still has a long way to go to recover, and the pain is still intense. She still needs your prayers.

Mom and Dad will be in Calgary tomorrow afternoon. Please pray that mom will be able to handle such a long flight after her surgery.

Just finished talking to mom this morning.

She is now out of the hospital, and in the hotel with dad. That is helping a lot for her loneliness. Now though, she has rehab, gym and physio and other appointments throughout the day. Today had been especially busy and she was quite exhausted.

She had been given one of those walkers that you have to lift and place forward and then step to it. Well another woman that went through the surgery had been watching mom a couple days struggling with it. She was leaving today and gifted mom her walker with wheels !! That has helped immensely.

She said though, that had she known how hard it was, she probably would not have gone. And yet, she said they literally feel the hand of God on them and all of our prayers. She spends a lot of time weeping as God physically comforts them. Prayers are a definite necessity , and they appreciate each one !!
