Katrina's Fire Recovery Fund

Donation protected
Katrina Lindgren is a 20 year old young woman and new mother.   Katrina along with her boyfriend Malin and their 4 month old baby boy Damien Tate, escaped a horrific apartment building fire in Mt. Vernon, WA on July 2, 2014.   Witnesses say the fire engulfed the building in minutes.  Two hundred people were forced from their homes and five people were injured.  The night of the fire, Katrina was at home with Damien and was just putting him to bed when they suddenly discovered their building was on fire.

They ran out of the building to safety and within seconds of escaping the first of several explosions erupted.  The extent of the fire was tremendous. They escaped with only their lives and the clothes on their back.  They are grateful to be alive and that all of their neighbors escaped. One neighbor was airlifted to Seattle with life threatening injuries.

Red Cross provided shelter for three days and gave them $300.

All of their personal belongings were damaged beyond repair from smoke and water.   Since flames did not destroy their belongings, the apartment's insurance company will not cover their loss.  Katrina and Malin work in Mount Vernon, Washington.

Katrina Lindgren is an Orcas Island native.  In 2012 Katrina graduated from Orcas Island High School, and while a Senior, she graduated as a Fire Cadet and First Responder from Orcas Island Fire & Rescue.

She believes her training and experience as a Fire Cadet is ultimately what saved her life and her family.  Upon seeing the smoke she knew that they needed to exit immediately.

Katrina is a hard worker with a very giving heart.
In 2011 (at age 17 and still in high school) she became a caregiver for a fellow friend and student who was tragically injured in a snowboarding accident leaving him a quadrapalegic.

For her Senior Project she organized a Mission Trip to Chicago to aid the homeless.  She organized a group of eight teens, to work with the Chicago Urban Program.  During the Mission Trip, Katrina said the group “will be serving those that cannot serve themselves.

Below are quotes from Katrina from an interview that appeared in an edition of Orcas Issues April 2011, regarding her Senior Project to help the homeless in Chicago.
http://orcasissues.com/katrina-lindgren-plans-project-to-help-homeless:

“Many people don’t know that even on our own beautiful Orcas Island, we have people that are without a home, living out of their car, unable to buy groceries, and much much more.

“I want people to think twice when they walk past the Food Bank Donations stand without donating.  I want them to think about those people that are starving all across the world before they waste food at their own house.  Many are not as fortunate as we are, and they need to be helped.

“When I was in 8th grade I decided that for my senior project, I was going to go somewhere and help people. I decided that whether it was somewhere like Africa, Libya, China, or even somewhere like Chicago, I would make a difference."

“This Mission Trip is open to ANYONE! I opened this trip to anyone that wanted to come because I felt that you don’t have to be a Christian or a strong member of a church or youth group in order to make a difference in the world."

Katrina comes from a family that gives back to anyone in need.  Her grandparents oversee the Orcas Island Food Bank. Her mother Judi Lindgren, annually organizes and fulfills the wishes of children faced with hardship as the "Secret Santa".

As a friend of the family, we hope to raise enough funds to help Katrina, Malin, and Damien Tate get back on their feet.
All funds raised will be used to cover their immediate living expenses and replace items lost.

Funds raised beyond the goal of $3000.00  will be placed in a savings account at KEY Bank of Eastsound, Washington.   A dance & fundraiser to benefit Katrina Lindgren hosted by Julie Remington took place at Random Howse Restuarant Pub and Eastsound, Washington on Saturday August 30 2014. Much appreciation to those who attended! ~ Mahalo!
