Who: Riverdale Avenue Community School (RACS) is an elementary school in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Brownsville. Brownsville is at once both a vibrant neighborhood and also an area of the city in which systemic marginalization and the impact of poverty greatly affect the lives of its residents. RACS staff are always searching for/creating innovative ways to mitigate against the ramifications of trauma for students and their families. One current area of focus for RACS is exploring how to equip teachers with appropriate, sensitive tools to address childhood trauma in the classroom.
What: RACS has identified the Collaborative Learning for Educational Achievement and Resilience (CLEAR) model. CLEAR is a 3-year program with proven success in equipping educators and school administrators to address trauma and toxic stress in children. CLEAR has been implemented in 32 school communities spanning 17 districts in Washington and California. Schools practicing the model have shown: decreased rates of truancy, expulsion and punitive disciplinary measures, as well as increased student and staff satisfaction and educational attainment.
Because of the way public education budgeting works, outside fundraising is the only way to bring a program like CLEAR to RACS.We need your help to cover the cost of bringing this training to Brownsville. Your contribution will enable teachers to help mitigate a child’s exposure to toxic stress and will empower the students of RACS, their families, and the Brownsville community well into adulthood.
This comprehensive program costs $50,000, totaling to $150,000 for the 3 year engagement. This money will cover the cost of bringing a CLEAR coach to the school, for 2 days / month for the full years. Through professional development and ongoing coaching the CLEAR professional and teachers work together to infuse a trauma-informed lens into the teaching, and ultimately the culture, of the school.
