1000 GOATS TO HELP PREVENT FIRES

Donation protected
Goats help prevent forest fires. The Pacific Northwest continues to be ravaged by devastating wildfires. In Spokane, Washington, our air index has been in the hazardous ranges - meaning it is literally a health hazard to breathe. We need a sustainable solution to help prevent as many fires as possible, ensuring cleaner air and less damage to our Earth and health. Donate to our 1000 Goats campaign to help fund a crew of one thousand goats to clear brush and debris in rural Northwest areas that continue to be prone to fires. The funds will be used to acquire the goat livestock, transportation methods for the goat livestock, and the fundamental administrative and physical set up involved in creating a base for the animals. Immediate efforts would include networking with agricultural, forestry, and fire professionals throughout the region, along with acquiring continued funding via possible grants, educational outreach through the community, political outreach, and more.  We need the funds as soon as possible to make an impact before our next fire season. Help us protect environmental health by helping us prevent as many fires as possible. We are grateful for any and all support - from sharing our campaign with others to monetary donations to goat and land donations. We are open to collaborative efforts, ideas, and discussion.

"About 6,000 wildland fires sweep California annually; in the awful 1999 fire season—roughly from April to November—fires consumed 273,000 acres, destroyed 300 homes and other buildings, and caused $500 million worth of damage. The number of fires has quadrupled in 30 years, as population growth relentlessly pushes human habitation ever deeper into fire-vulnerable areas."

"The goat clearance scheme is one of the key reasons the Bay Area hasn’t had a recurrence of a catastrophic fire in decades,” says Tom Klatt, former manager of the Office of Emergency Preparedness at UC Berkeley and the author of UC Berkeley's 2007 Fire Mitigation Program Annual Report."

"Fuel treatments aimed at reducing both horizontal and vertical continuity in fuels are of paramount importance as a prevention measure against fire propagation. Possible techniques include pruning, thinning (mainly low thinning), mastication, prescribed burning, and prescribed (or targeted) grazing. Their main target is crown fire avoidance by treating surface fuels and promoting low density and vertically discontinuous stands, thus eliminating fuel ladders. Grazing is an effective, nearly carbon-neutral weed control technique which is cost-effective, nontoxic, and nonpolluting. Goat grazing is a very interesting solution..."
