Claudia & Erick's Recovery Fund

$33,765 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 226 people in 15 months
Created October 11, 2017
Late Sunday/early Monday night we were woken up by our neighbor Claudette screaming "Kenwood is on fire. We have to leave NOW!” Our home at 2801 Bristol Rd was situated in a narrow, heavily wooded corridor, and our street dead ends at Annadel State Park, so we knew  we could be trapped so left immediately. In the panic, we grabbed a few belongings, our passports and one of our cats, Sheba. We needed to leave our other cat, the horse, the mule and the chickens behind. Through a ferocious and hot fire wind, lots of flying debris and falling trees we made it safely out of our valley. Almost at highway 12, we turned around to warn our friends at Morton’s / Aletheia community whom were not answering their phones. Through a route of fires, we all made it through Bennett Valley to the west of us, and then safely to a sister community, La Tierra, in Sebastopol where we have been most graciously put up for the time being. We have not been able to return since that night, but recently received the news that our house is gone. It is possible/likely that Erick’s shop and the source of his livelihood are also gone.

We are well taken care of for the moment, but will definitely need help to get back on our feet again. Both Erick and I do not have any personal belongings other than what we brought with us (extremely little) out of the house, so anything helps and is greatly appreciated. Proceeds from this campaign will be used to sustain us while we find a new place to live, as well as pay for first/last rent deposit for a new place. Thank you so much for helping us begin to rebuild.

Finally, we got a good amount of rain that relieved us from the ongoing fire danger, high level of toxic smoke from the fires north of us and many sleepless hours full of memories of our fires last year.

It’s been over a year since Erick and I lost not only our home and personal belongings but also all of our art and the tools and equipment we used for creating. The loss of my dance film library and film equipment was especially hard, but sometimes events like this force you to be creative in new ways, and today I am sharing with you the work that I did in response to the 2017 Sonoma Wildfire that devastated our community.

Over the past year, I have been exploring creative ways to document my own healing journey through movement and film. The project is part of my research to explore collective trauma healing through somatic and imaginal processes for communities that are affected by natural disasters. I am hoping that my work will inspire you and those who face similar experiences.

With all the news about the current fires many of you probably are reminded of our loss last year. We are ok and not in imminent danger here, but we are surrounded by heavy smoke from the fires about 2 hours northeast from us.

All this brings up a lot of memories, and everyone is on high alert as the fire danger here is still extremely high.

We are very sad about the loss for all the lives and home and wondering about the longterm effect on the soils and ocean where all the toxic ash goes.

Thank you for all your support, thoughts and wishes. Be safe!

It’s been a year ago since we launched our fire recovery campaign. While the remembrance of last years events has been very present for us,  particularly in the last days, we feel incredibly blessed to have had all this wonderful support from the community.

Beside your contributions, and those who helped us locally with everything from clothing to kitchenware and tools for Eric huge support has also been the artist in residency that we had been in since November last year. Thankfully our time here has been extended into Spring 2019, and we were already able to secure a new living place close by for the spring. We still looking for a new workspace studio place for Erick and crossing our fingers that we will find something soon.

Our time here allowed Erick to complete his first new big sculpture in May, which is now in the Sonoma Valley Museum Of Art as part of the show “From Fire, Love Rises.” Over the summer he completed several other new smaller wall pieces that are now for sale in a local gallery. You can read more about his work in a recently published article here ( http://vommag.com/lighting-up-the-night/). As part of my creative exploration of the collective post-fire wounds I am taking dancers in the burned areas for site-specific movement explorations. You can find out more about my project here ( https://regen.wedid.it/campaigns/5638).

Things are not always easy, and we have our ups and downs, but overall we are doing quite well. And mostly we are thankful that we have each other, and so many wonderful friends and family, and that we are alive and healthy!

Spring has arrived, and nature continues to be an inspiring guide on our post-fire journey. Lot's of beautiful wildflowers of which some of them only blossom after a fire filling the burned hills.

Most of the burned buildings are taken down by now, and with this also disappeared the remains of our house. All that is left now is an empty lot. It is very surreal to see it all gone.

We are continuing to be grateful for all your support and wish you Happy Easter. May all of our joint wishes continue to find fertile ground.

Erick and I keep moving and will keep you posted. I will be in Iceland in the next few weeks for a seminar that I am co-facilitating ( http://www.metacapital.net/iceland-seminar/), while Erick is continuing to work on the first public showing of his new piece at the Maker Fair in May.
