Claire Aleksandra

This is Claire. On Saturday March 11th at 6:30 am Claire's parents, Sarah and Darrin, awoke to their 10 week old baby daughter having a seizure. In the week leading up to this event, Sarah and Darrin made two separate attempts to seek medical care for their baby. Both times, Claire was sent home with the diagnosis of "the common cold." It was only after her seizure and after Sarah and Darrin rushed Claire to the emergency room at Cayuga Medical Center that proper diagnostic measures were taken. After a lumbar puncture and spinal tap it was determined that Claire was both in septic shock and has bacterial meningitis. She was intubated and immediately transferred via ambulance to Golisano Children's Hospital in Syracuse.

Claire is now in stable but critical condition in the pediatric intensive care unit after several terrifying days. She received a blood transfusion, remains intubated on the ventilator, is having her status closely monitored and is receiving an MRI of her brain to help determine how the seizure and disease process may have affected her.

Much remains to be known about Claire's prognosis, but little girl is strong and is fighting as hard as she can. Claire will be at the hospital for a minimum of 14 days to remain on long term IV antibiotics. Both of her parents are hard working and self employed and will be away from their jobs during this time which makes an already very stressful event even more precarious. Claire is the light of her parents' lives and they will do whatever they need to do to get her through this.
