Bereketabe Yohannes,  age 14,  passed away tragically in a drowning accident on a beautiful sunny day in San Francisco.  Bereketabe, a kind and spirited boy,  had just graduated from 7th grade at Claire Lilienthal School and was enjoying the start of the summer with friends on Crissy Field.

Bereketabe's parents wish is to have his final journey be to their home country of Ethiopia, where he will be laid to rest.  The family's financial situation would make this difficult.

While it is incomprehensible to conceive of such deep loss, we are asking for your help by contributing toward the costs of international funeral transportation for Bereketabe as well as airfare for the bereaved family.

Nothing can replace Bereketabe, but we hope this effort will relieve some of the family's stress and bring an element of comfort and support to them, during this heartbreaking time of deep loss.

With deep gratitude,
The Claire Lilienthal School Family

On behalf of the Claire Lilienthal School community and the Yohannes family, we are deeply grateful to every one of you for allowing us to reach our fundraising goal. Thank you for your kind messages of compassion and support.

Bereketabe's American community bid their sweet friend goodbye at a beautiful service here in San Francisco (Photo attached). Your contributions made it possible for the Yohannes family to travel back to Ethiopia to lay their precious son to rest in the stunningly beautiful area around the Debrelibanos monastery (Photo of the Debrelibanos area attached). Thanks to your extraordinary generosity, Bereketabe's parents will also be able to remain in Ethiopia for a while to begin their journey of healing, surrounded by their wider family, before returning to the United States.

Yesterday (Sunday, June 16, 2019), Berekatabe's classmates, teachers, friends and church community joined his parents and family in beautiful funeral service to say their goodbyes. Amidst deep sadness and tears, many shared how Berekatabe had touched their lives with his sunny smile, sense of humor, positive outlook, deep respect and caring for his parents and church community.

The Yohannes family will be leaving for Ethiopia tonight, to accompany their beautiful boy on his final journey. While we are not yet at our campaign goal, we are very close and wanted to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for your generosity and compassion, and send you this update. Photographs from the memorial pamphlet are attached.
