Who We Are:
We are Alex and Gretchen. A couple with a common love for America's first beverage: hard cider.
Alex lived in England for 6 years, nurturing his love for the little-known drink and trying as much as he possibly could. Back in the states, working at a wine and beer shop, he has made it his job (quite literally) to source and supply the public with as many craft ciders he can get his hands on. But it isn't enough. He wants to have his hands in the business and push to be Wilmington, Delaware's first craft cidery.
Gretchen's allergy to hops barred her from drinking buckets of beer in college and forced her to look elsewhere for adult libations, leading her right to Alex! The rest is history for them.
What We're Really Trying to Do:
Civil Cider is going to be Wilmington, Delaware's urban cidery. With a beautiful tasting room and production facilities located downtown, we hope to both educate the masses in real hard cider and allow them to enjoy a pint or a flight in a relaxing atmosphere after work or on the weekend.
We have a location. We have the orchards ready to dole out their apples. We have experienced cider makers and we have amazing staff ready to jump all in. But in order to sign our lease and apply for grants, we need to have a few more of our ducks in a row. Our first grant application is due December 1st and requires that we put down at least 50%...aka $50,000. On top of that we need to put a hold on our equipment (read: pay in full) before January 1st in order for the producers to begin making our tanks--this process can take upwards of 6 months.
The second $50,000 is for us to acquire our apples, have them juiced, and then trucked upstate to us in order to begin producing delicious cold cider…
