CIS-NYC Angel Fund Scholarship

Tax deductible

Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC (CIS-NYC) is raising money to support our Angel Fund Scholarship Program (AFSP). This scholarship program provides young undocumented immigrants with the opportunity of continuing their education in the United States. The scholarships cover their proven education-related expenses such as tuition, fees, books and supplies. We are unique in providing this funding as undocumented immigrants are not eligible for more traditional forms of school loans and scholarships. In addition to scholarships, students are provided with educational, social, and emotional support throughout the year in the form of individual counseling, case management and a youth support group.  Many of the students who receive support through the AFSP are the first in their families to attend any form of college, and many come from low-income households who possess limited English proficiency. Without this scholarship and the comprehensive support that comes with it, higher education would be out of reach for these incredible students. If we reach our funding goal of $5,500, we will be able to provide 18 students with scholarships for the 2018-19 academic year.

Angel Fund Scholarship Recipient Stories:

Ernesto is a second-year Angel Fund recipient from Guatemala. His family was impoverished, and as the sole support for his mother and sister he migrated to the United States for employment opportunities. Ernesto worked in construction, earned a GED and is now studying towards an Associate Degree in Small Business Entrepreneurship from Manhattan Community College. He is now 28-years old and has two semesters remaining with a goal of attending York College to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree.  Ernesto tells us that assistance from the Angel Fund allows him to focus on school and caring for his infant daughter and wife, rather than finding ways to make money. “I feel that I am not alone.”

Gloria , who migrated from Mexico, is the oldest child in a family of six. Now she is a sophomore at the City College of New York majoring in Civil Engineering. As a DREAMer, she was denied several opportunities she had been nominated or recommended for, and became aware of the lack of resources available to undocumented students. The only time Gloria’s immigration status did not matter was when she applied for the Angel Fund Scholarship. She tells us that the scholarship has helped make college a reality and reduced a large part of her financial burden as Civil Engineering is a costly major. “I am fortunate to receive this scholarship alongside my younger sister, who is also undocumented. I am thankful for the all support and help that I get from Cabrini Immigrant Services.”

Every bit makes a difference!

- $100 would cover the cost of a TI-84 scientific calculator
- $150 would allow a student to buy their biochemistry textbook
- $200 covers one semester of fees
- $500 will cover the cost of one credit at a CUNY school
- $1,500 is enough to sponsor an Angel Fund student!
