Cindy and Mike Challis are my parents. Two years ago, Cindy was diagnosed with colon cancer, and had surgery to remove a cluster of tumors. Her colon cancer has returned. This time it is stage 4 cancer, where her colon cancer has spread to her liver and a lymph node.

I'm asking for help to reduce the burden of travel expenses for my mom to receive her cancer treatments, as well as assistance to cover the cancer treatments themselves.

Cindy is receiving care from Swedish Cancer Institute in Issaquah, WA. It's a great facility that is included in their health insurance network. Unfortunately, it's 185 miles of driving each way (3 hours 15 minutes each way) for Mike and Cindy to go to the Swedish Cancer Institute for treatment. Cindy and Mike have already driven there 5 times in the last few weeks to confirm this diagnosis and determine a treatment plan.

The treatment plan:
This week Cindy started intense chemotherapy. She needs to travel to Swedish Cancer Institute every 3 weeks for 6 months to receive this treatment. After 3 months she will have a CT scan to see if the tumors are shrinking. After 6 months there is a possibility she will need liver resection surgery or targeted ablation of the remaining tumors.

With this treatment plan, Cindy will need to drive to Issaquah at least 17 times in the upcoming 6 months. That's over 6,400 miles or 110 hours of driving. Treatment days are long since it takes several hours to receive the treatment, plus they need to drive to Issaquah and back.

My mom, Cindy Challis, has been set up as the direct beneficiary of
this fund so that she may use funds raised to cover the cost of travel
and cancer care expenses. We appreciate any and all donations.

Please continue to keep Cindy and the family in your thoughts and
prayers, if you are in a position to help, whether big or small, please feel free to donate, so we may decrease the financial stress on
Cindy and Mike. Thank you very much, and may God bless you.

Please consider sharing this so that the goal may be reached quickly.

Mom is enjoying her Thanksgiving from the hospital and loving the flowers AKA Christmas tree our family sent her. Including offline donations, we have raised $787 toward my parents' $1,500 expenses for this surgery. Half of the hotel bill, the parking fees, the toll fees, and the cost of my dad's Thanksgiving dinner have been covered. Thank you so much to everyone for your support in every form! As we go into Black Friday, please share with your friends and consider donating a portion of your Black Friday money so we can fully cover the hotel bill for my family. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Mom's surgeon removed about 10% of her liver during surgery yesterday, and all of the lymphatic tissue where the cancer was. Now she has at least 6 more days in the hospital. This morning the doctor said they were going to perform an EKG and could remove her foley catheter and one of her IV lines so she can start walking a little. They might remove the tube from her nose today or tomorrow, and then she will be able to drink fluids. We have raised enough money to pay for 1/4 of my family's hotel bill. Thank you to everyone who donated so far. The out of pocket cost for my parents this weekend is about $1,500, though, so if you haven't donated yet and can contribute toward those expenses, it would help our parents a lot. Thank you also for your prayers and well wishes. Happy Thanksgiving!

They moved mom out of the recovery unit and into her own room. She's very groggy and napping mid-conversation, but doing good!

Mom is out of surgery, which lasted for 6 hours. The surgeon came by and talked to my dad while I was getting lunch. Here is what my dad said:

"The surgeon was able to perform the whole surgery with only one incision instead of two. They removed one spot on the liver and removed the gall bladder (it had stones). The other cancer spot on the right lobe was not visible anymore so he did not take the lobe off. Most the liver is still intact. He said if the cancer cells come back on the right lobe, they can use ablation on it without surgery using a probe method. He was able to remove the involved lymph nodes in the abdomen from the same opening, making the surgery less complicated."

Mom will likely be in the recovery room for a few hours before we can see her.
