On May 10th 2018 Cindy and Richard were taken advantage of to the point it has ruined their lives. Cindy and Richard live in San Jose California and have lived there their whole lives. Due to Richard being unable to work and now being on disability and Cindy losing her position with a local school district for the past 15 years. Cindy decided to cash in her 401k of $26,000 and start a new life for herself, her husband and their youngest son. The plan was to find a fix-er-upper home near myself and Kenya (Kenya is my wife to be, Daughter to Cindy and Richard) in the NE Ohio area. With some effort and multiple showings, Kenya and Myself were able to find a house for them that was acceptable 10 minutes down the road and the asking price was negotiated to $25,000.
This is where the nightmare begins......
Cindy was dealing with a Remax agent "Brent Karlen" who was in charge of selling the home for the local Realtor in our town "Jeff First". After everything was set properly and all documents were signed, the next step was to "WIRE" the money to a bank account that was provided to the Remax agent from the local real estate agent. On the morning of the 10th, the Remax agent received an email from the local realtor with the wiring instructions to the sellers bank.
An hour later the Remax agent received an additional email from the local realtor with instructions that the first email was a mistake and this second email had the proper wire instructions. Both emails came from the same server and the same email address. The Remax agent notified Cindy about the mix up and she proceeded to Wire the money.
The money was wired but the title agency never received the money...
The second email was a scam email with fake account and routing information.
Cindy sent 25,000 to a scammers checking account due to the direction of her Remax agent who received multiple hacked emails from the local real estate agent. Its been 4 weeks and we have not gotten anywhere, these poor folks are so distraught, minutes seem like hours. They have nothing left. Nobody wants to cooperate because nobody wants to claim liability.
On behalf of the Bernal Family I would like to ask for donations or at least spreading of the word about this awful scam. Please share.
