More Information about the Competition
The Calumet High School Drama Club is hosting the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association District and Regional Theatre Competitions in February. The Calumet High School Drama Club will be competing in the Studio Theatre Division, and would be the only Upper Peninsula team to compete in the statewide competition in Grand Rapids on February 19-20, 2016.
Studio Theatre, unlike Main Stage, is a show relying heavily on the actors and the script and making little to no use of extensive technical aspects of a show. Calumet High School will perform Under the Northern Star, an original one-act play written specifically for this competition by local playwright Kris Kyro. The play speaks to the unique heritage of our area. Drama Club Advisor, Dave Heinz said, “The students are thrilled to be able to represent Calumet, and the entire U.P., at the state level. But what is even more exciting is that we will be able to showcase something original and representative of our local culture.”
In order to advance to the state theatre competition, the Calumet High School Drama Club must perform their one-act play in front of a live audience as part of the District and Regional Competition requirements. The public is invited and encouraged to attend one or both of the following performances:
District: Tuesday, February 2, 2016 7:00pm Calumet High School Commons
Regional: Saturday, February 13, 2016 2:00pm Calumet theatre
Price: Any donation appreciated
These performances will also act as a fundraiser to help cover travel expenses for the trip to states.
