“There’s a new way to celebrate the holidays and it’s called Christmas for Cancer”. Our mission is to provide assistance to children during the holidays whose parents are undergoing cancer treatment... and so it began.
This was the opening paragraph written by 9-year old Roman Venegas for his community service school assignment five years ago. Roman’s best friend was Trey. Trey’s father had been diagnosed with stage 3 cancer and was unable to work during the time of his lengthy treatments and multiple surgeries. Roman solicited the help of friends, Moms, and Dads to bake, package and sell homemade spiced pecans throughout their neighborhoods. Three weeks before Christmas, Roman and his friends decorated a small Christmas tree with all the money they raised from the pecan sales. They went to Trey’s home and presented his family with the “Christmas for Cancer” tree. This tree symbolized hope, love and friendship.
Roman, his brother, Sean, and their friends, David, Trey, Danielle, Benji, Sam, Shannon and Victoria have now formed a charitable organization called “Christmas for Cancer”. Since inception, Christmas for Cancer has helped the children of families such as these: the single mother (breast cancer) with 5 children, a father (inoperable brain tumor) with 2 children, a school teacher (breast cancer) with 2 children, a father (colon cancer) with 2 children, a grandmother (breast cancer) who had adopted her 4 grandchildren, and an 8-year old boy left behind when his mother succumbed to breast cancer.
The children of the Christmas for Cancer organization continue to raise money in order to provide financial assistance to children during the holidays whose parents are undergoing cancer treatment.
Cancer does not discriminate. Each one of us has been impacted by cancer either in our own families or within our friendships.
