Dear Ones,

I am humbled to be reaching out to family, friends and strangers alike... I’ll get straight to the point and then provide a bit more context. My father, Chris, is in the ICU in Savannah, Georgia. Both of my parents need your positive thoughts, sincere prayers and any financial support that you can provide. I never thought I would be in this position and yet here I am. Everything seems to be moving in slow motion... like a Grey's Anatomy episode.

Sometimes we think doctors are miracle workers. They can do amazing things and I've never been more thankful for modern medicine. At the same time, I am also deeply trusting in our Father in Heaven, the Great Physician. We know our Father calls the shots and numbers our days!

Chris Kohut - My dad has owned and operated his own business for the past 41 years. He is locally known as the Vinyl Doctor. Chris repairs Vinyl and Leather upholstery at Savannah's car dealerships. This business has been our family's main source of income.

He is also a talented musician. Chris boarded at The Columbus Boy Choir School in Princeton NJ for three years. He had the opportunity to perform in Europe. He taught himself to play guitar at age eleven and he has been playing music ever since. His passion is early music, Renaissance lutes and wooden flutes.

Ellie Kohut - My mom has served as a nanny for children in her home and in other's homes for the 25 years. Together, Chris and Ellie have raised 4 children and have 6 grandchildren and one on the way.

Sometime in July Chris cut on his foot and it turned to osteomyelitis (infection of the bone) and cellulitis (bacterial infection of the skin and tissues beneath the skin) in his leg. This caused  him to be admitted to Memorial Health Medical Center in Savannah, GA on July 13, 2018. The orthopedic surgeon treated the big toe with IV antibiotics in hopes that it would heal and would not have to amputate. Being a type II diabetic, Chris had some other health concerns when he was in the hospital but the physicians released him after adjusting his diabetic medications.

Chris was home for 6 days and was not feeling well. His legs got weak under him and he fell multiple times at home. He was scheduled for a routine follow up and when the doctors drew his labs and learned about the falling symptoms, they sent him back to the ER. He was admitted to Memorial Health Medical Center again on July 24th. The doctors confirmed some ischemic strokes with an MRI a few days later (These are usually caused by a blood clot that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain. This keeps blood from flowing to the brain. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. Another cause is stenosis, or narrowing of the artery).

Further labs indicated concerns with his kidneys and lungs. He has pneumonia in his left lung as well. The medical team was working to find the cause of the ischemic strokes with a TEE (Transesophageal echocardiography) of his heart but my dad could not tolerate the testing because his oxygen was not at a high enough level.

As a result, he was moved to a cardiac step down unit at 60% flow oxygen on July 30th. The Nephrologist (Kidney specialist) tried to give his system a chance to respond to IV therapy but his system could not tolerate it. Early Friday morning, August 3rd, Chris went into respiratory distress and was moved to the Cardiac ICU.

Chris is currently on a breathing machine and is in kidney failure. The medical team is treating him with dialysis and and we are praying that his body will heal.

Neither of my parents are able to work at this time and while my dad has health insurance, not all of the medical expenses will be covered.  All donations will be used for medical and household expenses.

We really appreciate your prayers and financial gifts. Please pray with faith, hope and love for Chris and the Kohut family.

With deep gratitude,

Sarah and the entire Kohut family
