Charles Houston Recreation Center Teen Center Renovation
The teens have spoken out and we have listened! The Charles Houston Recreation Center Advisory Council (CHAC) is looking to raise $70,000 to renovate the existing Teen Center at the Charles Houston Rec Center (CHRC) in the Parker Gray neighborhood of Old Town Alexandria.
We have rasied $30,000 as of November 2016. We hope to raise an additional $10,000 through the GoFundME website.
By renovating the existing space, the newly renovated Teen Center would provide local youths a dedicated place to be safe, have fun, learn, and grow.
The new plans for the Teen Center answer all the demands we heard from the teens! We will have a video game / entertainment zone for Jaylen, a creative arts zone for Haydee, a computer and study zone for Shannon and Zachary, a social zone for Detriona and Monnik, a music zone, and a food and wellness zone.
This campaign will provide funds for:
· The design and renovation of the new teen center space
· Upgrade of technology and furnishings within the teen center
· Materials and resources for new learning and engagement programs
The Advisory Council recognizes the challenges faced by local youth and sees the need to create a dedicated space where teens can be safe, have fun, learn, and grow. CHRC plays an important role but the facility does not provide space that will attract and retain teens. We need to move youth off the street and into a safe, self-managed environment for socializing and learning to alter their destiny.
Our goals are:
· Engage teens in creating and managing success through leadership and personal development
· Engage teens, families, and schools to invest in teen success through achievement, life-skill building, and employment
· Build physically and emotionally healthy teens via diverse recreational activities
· Create opportunities for community investment and engagement to support sustainability
With no guaranteed financial support from the city, this project relies completely on the kindness and support of in-kind donations, volunteers, and private donations. We are looking to raise $50,000 prior to April 2017.
CHAC is a 501c3 tax-exempt nonprofit organization that collects tax-deductible donations for facilities & programs at the rec center.
