My name is Scarlett Lewis and I am the founder of the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement.  I started this organization following the murder of my 6 year old son, Jesse McCord Lewis, in his first grade classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School on 12/14/2012 alongside 19 of his classmates and 6 educators. Following the tragedy, I wanted to provide a solution to the anger,  violence and mental disturbances we are seeing in our society.

For the past 4 1/2 years I have worked with a group of educators to create a PreK through 12th grade program called, "The Choose Love Enrichment Program." This program teaches students to choose love through social and emotional learning "SEL", character values, neuroscience, positive psychology, post traumatic growth research, mindfulness and more by cultivating connection, resilience and compassion. The program is currently being taught in classrooms across the country and throughout the world and is free to educators and schools because every child is entitled to learn these 21st century life skills that will help them become happy, healthy and successful individuals.  You can check it out at www.jesselewischooselove.org.

The need and want for love is what connects us all as human beings. Many of the issues we face today come from a lack of love. I worked with educators to develop a program that teaches students how to choose love for themselves and others. Children who are connected, resilient and compassionate will be happy, healthy and productive citizens and will not want to harm one another (and there is research to back this up!). I invite you to be a part of the movement to choose love!

There is a constitutional obligation to provide a free and appropriate education to every child. We know, through decades of research, that this obligation includes social and emotional learning. The Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement has accomplished this for schools with the launch of the Choose Love Enrichment Program.
Social and emotional learning teaches children how to get along with one another, how to manage their emotions and how to take responsibility for their actions. These '21st century life skills' have proven to be even more important to a child's future success than academics alone. In fact when children have social and emotional learning in schools they get better grades (by at least 11%!), test scores, have less stress and anxiety, better relationships and are more likely to graduate!

There are also long term studies that have followed kindergarteners through adulthood that have found fewer mental health issues, less substance abuse, incarceration, violence, even divorce rates! In fact ALL the evidence points towards social and emotional learning being even more important than academic learning (and academics improve with these programs!).

Social and emotional learning is the most proactive and preventative mental health initiative available! SEL is also the BEST way to create a SAFE school environment.

According to CASEL.org, SEL is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.  These skills include awareness of self and others, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, etc. There are decades of research showing the tremendous benefits of teaching children social and emotional learning skills that include  improved attitudes and behaviors with a greater motivation to learn, deeper commitment to schools, increased time devoted to schoolwork, and better classroom behavior; fewer negative behaviors with deceased distruptive class behavior, noncompliance, aggression, delinquent acts, and disciplinary referrals; and reduced emotional distress with fewer reports of student depression, anxiety, stress and social withdrawl.

There was a report that came out after the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy that indicated if the perpetrator had access to social and emotional learning that the tragedy might not have happened. We spend billions of dollars treating symptomatic issues such as substance abuse, mental illness and violence in our society. The Choose Love Enrichment Program is a powerful, proactive and preventative approach that can help our children lead happier and healthier lives and can cultivate a safer, more peaceful and loving world.

Every child is entitled to access to this life changing and  life saving education therefore the Choose Love Enrichment Program is FREE. I am raising money to help implement this program in schools across the country, and world! to finalize the program post the pilot phase, to create additional resources for the program, to evaluate the program and to create a database so that we can support the educators and students using the program. The program is almost complete and the majority of it is already available online. We have launched pilots in over 100 classrooms and schools across the country and we are in need of additional funds right away!

I think about what we focus on in schools today: anti-bullying, suicide prevention, drug awareness, sex education (with a focus on the negative aspects) - all a focus on the negative and telling students, this is what they can't do to feel good. Statistically, these programs are not anywhere near as effective as SEL. The Choose Love Enrichment Program provides the option to focus on the positive- by empowering students with the awareness that they can CHOOSE LOVE in their own lives. The program gives them the tools and knowledge to make this choice for themselves - helping them to feel good and cultivating personally responsible and kind citizens.

We can't wait for others to solve the issues we are experiencing in our world! We want to be safe and feel good! Be a part of the movement to choose love! We can only do this together!!

Thank you for helping to create a safer, more peaceful and loving world. As Jesse would say, "Let's rock and roll!"

Choosing love,

Scarlett Lewis

Another shooting and more victims. My heart goes out to the parents of the students murdered. We need to act NOW. Decades of research supports Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)as being the

#1 way to cultivate SAFE SCHOOL environments.

SEL is the #1 most proactive and preventative mental health initiative there is! This means SEL prevents the suffering before it starts!

There is something you can do. Help us spread the word about our FREE comprehensive PreK-12th grade SEL program.

As a mother of a young child senselessly gunned down in his first grade classroom, I couldn't wait for someone else to fix the problem. I took responsibility for living in a world where our educators and students are getting massacred in their schools and became part of the solution!

Please support the worldwide movement to CHOOSE LOVE today! THANK YOU for being a part of the SOLUTION!!

It has been almost five years since my son, Jesse Lewis, was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School alongside nineteen of his classmates and six educators in one of the worst mass murders in U.S. history. Shortly after his death, I decided to be part of the solution to the issues that we're seeing in our society—and that also caused the tragedy. I went on to create the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement and became an advocate for social and emotional learning (SEL) that teaches children how to manage their emotions, feel connected, and have healthy relationships.

Please join me in celebrating what would have been Jesse's 11th birthday by making a donation this month. I invite YOU to join me in our movement to Choose Love and become part of the solution. SEL is not a privilege for our children; it is a life transforming and even lifesaving education that will benefit them for the rest of their lives! Your generosity will help us ensure that we can provide the Choose Love Enrichment Program to even more students next year.

I surrounded myself by experts to create The Choose Love Enrichment Program. The curriculum is a free, comprehensive SEL program that empowers educators and their students to choose love for themselves and others. While we can't always choose what happens to us, we can choose how we respond. This program teaches children how to handle adversity, have courageous conversations, and to respond with love. Launched in August of 2016, the program has been downloaded more than 1,000 times in 44 different states and 13 countries. These teachers, counselors and school administrators reached about 90,000 students during the school year.

Written by educators, for educators, the Choose Love Enrichment Program includes powerful lessons for Pre-K through 12th grade and is aligned with Common Core Standards, American School Counselor Association Mindsets and Behaviors for Student Success, and SEL Competencies.

Booneville High School started using the Choose Love Enrichment Program in January 2017 after a teacher read about the program in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette. Tragically, the school community lost three students within a period of six months last year. The first student died by suicide. Six months later, and one week into the new school year, they tragically lost another student by suicide. A week after her death, while two students were in transport to the memorial service, a car ran a stop sign and killed a third student.

The school’s faculty, students and staff were in a state of shock, trauma and hopelessness. They hoped that the Choose Love Enrichment Program would help students focus and boost academic outcomes. But, they gained so much more through the program. It provided an opportunity for students and educators to have courageous conversation and to be more open and trusting with one another. Most importantly, the counselor said that “the Choose Love program is healing the school and providing hope again.”
