Chavela is a proud recipient of the Distinguished Merit Scholarship for the School of Art Institute of Chicago to enter in the Fall 2017. Being the youngest girl of 11 siblings, she has worked hard to make her voice known through expressions in the Arts. In 2015, she received the a Sheriff's Citation and Recognition as Maryland Masters Award presented by Governor Hogan for her outstanding artwork. For 2 consecutive years, she won the high school 'enpleinair' competition held by the Maryland Fine Arts Association in Annapolis, Maryland. Her oil pastels and self-portraits have been featured in St. Johns College gallery and The Walters Museum in Baltimore. Her exceptional ability to capture emotions, expressions and beauty in exploding color, continue to bring joy to this promising artist.
She is working hard, taking commissions and doing community work to earn the money she will need to attend SAIC in Chicago. Her amazing talent has given her access to paint murals for the Annapolis Children's Museum and Eastport Elementary School, as well as design sets and logos for her drama department at Glenn Burnie High School.
Chavela is also active not only in her school, but is a committed worker in her church, teaching Sunday School and infusing art into her 2nd and 3rd grade lessons.
Chavela can make a difference in her community through art. She is bright, committed, hard working, and passionate about being a young, gifted African-American lady, with an artistic voice.
