We, members of the Charlottesville Clergy Collective, an interfaith group of faith leaders, want you to know about our next step in addressing racism. From October 6 through 13, 2018 we will sponsor Cville2Jtown (Charlottesville to Jamestown): Pilgrimage of Transformation.

In response to the events of August 11 and 12, 2017, this pilgrimage, sponsored by the Charlottesville Clergy Collective, will provide a constructive opportunity for us to take the next step in addressing racism in America and its attending systemic injustices. On our journey we will hear stories and untold histories, we will build relationships and we will identify common concerns that need to be transformed in order to bring about racial equity.

Our journey will kick off Saturday, October 6 from central Charlottesville. Our first leg will take us past Emancipation Park (Market Street Park) and the proposed site for a marker to remember the July 12, 1898 lynching of John Henry James -- an African American man from Charlottesville -- as we make our way to Monticello for an education and reflection experience at Mulberry Row and the African American Burial Grounds.

Over the week of October 8 to 11, we will host educational and cultural activities in Charlottesville, listening to stories from Native Peoples and African Americans, learning about history, policies and practices of discrimination and domination, honoring the people who have worked to end racism, and celebrating the rich cultural contributions both communities have made.

On October 12, we will take a pilgrimage to Richmond where we will go on a Slave Walk with a guide, followed by a time of group reflection and discussion.

On October 13, we will take a pilgrimage by bus to Jamestown and Ft. Monroe as we travel back through history to learn about the history of enslavement and oppression of Africans and native peoples here in Virginia.

Details about these events and the pilgrimage itself are posted on our website: https://cville2jtown.com.

Our desired outcomes for the pilgrimage include:

being present and open to new perspectives
telling hard truths and hearing hard realities that lead to crucial conversations between whites and people of color
building a commitment to dismantle racism
embracing the conviction that there is more that connects us than separates us
working for equity in areas of housing, jobs, education, wages, etc.
writing another, spiritually grounded, chapter for Charlottesville

Donations to this fund will go towards providing scholarships for events that require a registration fee.
