Louder Than A Bomb - Youth Poetry Fest 2021
Hello hello, my name is David, today is Wednesday February 17th and there's two feet of snow piled up outside of my home in Humboldt Park. If you're in Chicago I'm guessing you're snowed in as well. Today is my birthday! Our birthdays are opportunities for transfers of energy, and I'm asking for some of yours. Grab some coffee, crank your space heater, and give me 10 minutes of your time...
You know those moments where the dots just finally seem to connect? They are few and far between, but they do come. This week I had one of those moments. I had an amazing opportunity to connect over the phone with Donor Relations Manager Demetrius Amparan from Young Chicago Authors - an organization I've wanted to get involved with for years. I just never took that first step.
I am a writer and musician but most importantly, a lifelong Chicagoan. I grew up in the city, with access to all of the resources necessary to find my place in creative writing. Those resources, unfortunately, are not made available to every kid - in a city with such economic inequality. For my birthday today I am asking you to support a damn cool youth organization that connects young writers to great resources.
THE WORLD'S LARGEST YOUTH POETRY FESTIVAL is almost here...running from February-April of this year!
"Louder Than A Bomb" is a run out of an organization called Young Chicago Authors - based right here on the near west side.
"LTAB" is an annual event hosting over 500 youth poets for 5 weeks of Olympic-style poetry bouts, workshops, and special events. Students rep schools and community groups all throughout the Chicago area. They perform original solo and group poems in a tournament-style competition. Louder Than A Bomb is currently hosted in over 13 other cities across the U.S. by partner organizations. In honor of the poets and sustainability of programs, YCA has a goal of raising $50,000 ($26,000 reached) this LTAB season with all proceeds going directly toward the 10,000 young people they serve.
Through creative writing, Young Chicago Authors helps young people from all backgrounds to understand the importance of their own stories and those of others, so that they can pursue the path they choose and work to make their communities more just and equitable."
Chicago is loaded with untapped potential. I see it all around me. Help us get some funds to support "Louder Than a Bomb 2021". The past year has hit NFP's hard. Private donors are often the lifeblood of many great Chicago charities. $2,000 is the goal of this fundraiser, a small piece of the $50,000 they need - but breaking massive goals into smaller achievable pieces is the plan here.
As this two week fundraiser goes on, I will be connecting you with awesome work from 10 Chicago artists who have donated pieces to this campaign, to be sold for donations.
Thanks for your time. Stay warm Chicago...I highly suggest some carhartt long johns.
