Help Support the Dr De Guzman NICU at Half Assini
Norberto G. De Guzman, MD, would have been 90 years old on June 6, 2023. He passed away on March 10, 2023 and lived a life dedicated to his family and his profession. After his advanced medical training in the Philippines, Israel and Austria and serving as the Medical Director at the US Army 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, he practiced for 40+ years with staff privileges at several metro Atlanta medical centers but primarily served his patients at Northside Medical Center.
During his retirement years, he remained active as a Physician Consultant in OBGYN Services at the Claremore Indian Hospital in Oklahoma and as a Founding Advisory Board Member for YONKOFA Project from 2011 - 2020, an all volunteer nonprofit.
YONKOFA Project held a special place for both Norberto and his wife, Lettie, who served as the VP of Fundraising from 2011 - 2020. They believed strongly in YONKOFA Project’s mission to build sustainable healthcare and resilient communities, the foundation for independence and economic prosperity.
In honor of his dedication to the medical field and to mark his 90th birthday this June, we are aiming to raise $12,500 to buy three items needed for the NICU at Half Assini District Hospital in Ghana. Dr. Gabriella Nunci, a founding member of YONKOFA Project and one time intern for Norberto, is dedicating the effort and naming it the Dr. De Guzman NICU. YONKOFA Project is a 501(c)(3) charity and donations are tax deductible. Donors will also receive a tax donation letter from Go Fund Me
The three items are
Incubator @ $5000
Monitor @ $2500
Phototherapy unit - called a Firefly @ $5000 (Used for babies with jaundice)
In November 2022 we donated an incubator, monitor, and four bassinets to Half Assini Hospital in Ghana. The lack of fundamental equipment led to not-so-very-premature babies dying in Ghana. We decided to try to make a difference at one of our favorite hospitals. The medical director is very committed to maternal and infant health which was near and dear to Norberto’s passion. The very first tiny patient to use the incubator was only 25 weeks and 5 days gestation at 1.5 pounds. With this small donation, the baby survived. We were amazed and delighted! Please help us to expand the NICU and make this lifesaving technology available to more babies in the Jomoro region of Ghana and continue to build on the legacy of Norberto G. De Guzman, MD.
