About Whale and Dolphin Conservation
WDC's vision of a world where every whale and dolphin is safe and free is not a noble gesture, but an essential means to sustain the future of the planet. The sunlit surface of the ocean is home to phytoplankton, tiny plant-like creatures which produce at least half of the Earth's oxygen and serve as the base of the marine food web. Whales recycle and move nutrients to surface waters where they act as the oceans' gardeners, fertilizing the phytoplankton on which our planet depends. Even in death, whales sustain life. When whales die naturally they sink to the seabed and become mini-ecosystems sustaining all manner of marine life. Taking with them huge amounts of carbon, whale carcasses fight climate change. Our mission is to amaze people with the wonder of whales and dolphins and inspire global action to protect them. By educating more people on the key role whales play, we are motivating individuals to help us allow whale populations to survive and thrive.
