Hi, I’m Maya Wheeler, founder of the Wezesha Dada Center (WDC) — a nonprofit in Colorado that empowers individuals—especially aspiring entrepreneurs, small business owners, and career seekers—to achieve economic prosperity through hands-on development programs, strong community connections, and sustainable growth opportunities.

One of our most meaningful initiatives is The Sugary Stop — a youth-led lemonade and beverage stand that teaches teens how to run a business while gaining real-world job experience.

But this isn’t just about lemonade.

It’s about changing lives and building futures.

“How Do I Get a Job If No One Will Hire Me?”

That’s what one of our students, Jamal, asked after applying to over a dozen jobs and getting the same response:

“We’re looking for someone with experience.”

But how do you get experience if no one gives you a chance?

At The Sugary Stop, Jamal learned how to track sales, show up on time, greet customers, and manage a team. He got his first real work experience, and more importantly, he got his first paycheck — a moment of pride and possibility.

Two months later, Jamal applied again to a local café.

This time, he got the job.

Why We’re Fundraising

We’re raising funds to:

✅ Pay stipends to youth who participate in The Sugary Stop, because their time and talent deserve compensation

✅ Cover vendor fees so our youth can run their stand at pop-up markets, fairs, and festivals

✅ Hire staff to supervise and support our youth during events

✅ Create a structured, safe environment that builds confidence, reduces risk, and keeps youth engaged in something meaningful

This program helps youth gain critical job skills, develop resilience, and experience the dignity of being paid for their work. When young people feel seen, supported, and valued, they are far less likely to become involved in violence or unsafe behavior.

$25 funds a stipend for one youth shift

$50 covers vendor fees or transportation to an event

$100 supports a full weekend of youth-led enterprise with staff support
