Help us save baby "Dex"
Dex was presented to a local hospital on June 19th. He was almost comatose, minimally responsive, with dangerously low blood sugar. Dex is short for Dextrose, the sugar solution that saved his life. He was also given fluids and within 30 minutes was alert and able to walk on his own!
Wescott Acres Pet Rescue agreed to sponsor/intake him and he went home with a staff member from the hospital to monitor and foster.
He did well overnight but starting vomiting Friday morning. He received more treatment and was perky again, bouncing around and playing. Then around 5pm on Friday night he had a short lasting seizure. He came to pretty quickly and was given his emergency dextrose by his foster and rushed to South Carolina Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Care.
He again perked up quickly after receiving the sugar solution but then started vomiting again.
Dex weighs just 1.8 pounds! He is SO small that his body can't regulate his blood sugar properly. He has to be syringe fed, refusing to eat on his own, but he is taking it well and now able to hold some food down.
His Critical Care team have been wonderful and often comment about how much personality he has for such a tiny little guy!
Dex has been in the ICU since Friday evening and we were hopeful we would get to go back to his foster today. Unfortunately he had another seizure very early this morning and his doctor wants to keep hanging onto him.
She thinks if we can just keep him regulated long enough and get him eating good that all be well, he just needs time for his tiny body to mature more.
We have visited with Dex every single day, offering him support and love and some extra cuddles!
As of today (Monday, June 23rd) his bill is currently at $3,700 and we anticipate more to come. We desperately want to continue to help this precious little baby but as a small, non-profit rescue, this is wiping out all of our funds. We need help from our community to continue to support tiny Dex!
